saw everybody saying how buggy it was

The people saying how buggy it was are the same people who aren't using it, because all they know is that indeed it was buggy when it was new. They stopped using it when it was buggy and haven't experienced that with all those bugfixes it eventually became very stable.
Right now there's hardly any reason to stay with 8.0 if you have 8.1 available. In fact you're missing out on a lot, for example the very useful global search function.

I was not aware that they had fixed all that stuff. The last time I tried 8.1 I got "unexpected error occured when running the game" all the time. But hopefully this means that won't happen again.
Another reason I have always liked 8.0 over 8.1 is that the room editor is normal and works very simply(it functions just like all the past gm versions), the 8.1 editor has a very wonky feeling :P although I guess you can get used to anything.

I'm using 8.1 and it's working perfectly for me.
When I get some funding I may move over to GM:Studio so that I can publish some Android ideas I have.

8.1 is brilliant - so much better than 8. I can't see any reason to keep using the old version, unless you're stuck with something like Ogre, which only runs on 8.

GM'81 offers a nice room editor and zooming in more or less anything. GM8 is pretty nice, too, but the room editor really makes '81 stand out. Also the 8 family offers functions deprecated in Studio (such as good ol' execute_string() and show_message()) so in one way 8.x > studio.

I'd like to switch to 8.1. But because it is CRAP, It doesn't work on my Windows 7. The launcher is CRAP, and doesn't run. I manually open the temporary files the update extracts, but never places and put it into the right folders. Unfortunately, it is CRAP, so the window never shows, and the process closes in seconds. Also I have brought it up with bug support three times; All three on severe. This problem happens with 8.1-Studio because I had signed up for the Studio Beta. Unfortunately, it was all CRAP.

Also, GM8 is awesome.

I can understand some people sticking with GM8.1 and then buying GM9 -- instead of GM:Studio. However, using GM8 doesn't make sense to me, since GM8.1 offered so many improvements. But that a personal choice we each make.

From a practical point of view, I'd recommend not getting too far behind, however. At some point YYG stops supporting older versions. So it's probably wise to stick with the current, or the previous, version.

The depreciation's for the sake of speed an compatibility in Studio ironically seem to make GM8-81 the better product as far as making windows games go. Funny, seeing as how I still get faster speeds in GM8 than in Studio as far as 3D goes (The hardware acceleration, funnily enough, hates slow hardware).

Whether these are permanent, or GM:Next is going to come back full force for desktop development remains to be seen. When you see the things UDK and Unity can do on Android and iOS with such speed it makes you wonder what GM could do with a full rewrite from scratch.

Of course I still love GM, it's very quick to learn and the results can be nice. The lack of royalties and restrictive licenses is absolutely wonderful as well! I'm just really interested in how GM:Next will play out. Does Yoyo think the same way I do? Do they want to keep GM on the same level or are more dramatic changes coming? Exciting times are ahead.

I just pray they hire a real damn pro at developing the new UI

I've tried GM 8.1 but some of my old GM 8 projects aren't compatible with it ( I got frequent surface error ). Although GM 8.1 has more features I personally prefer old GM 8.0 because I've spent so much time with it and learned most of it's parts.

I use gm8.0 and it's great.

I think that to make a good game you need good programming, good graphics and good music, so the version of gamemaker used doesn't really matter.

Anyone can buy GM studio and still make crappy games with it.

GMHTML5 could be nice, because it makes compatibility much easier, however I'm not buying GM studio.

I still use 8.0, since I have a game project far in the making there and some DLLs are not compatible with 8.1. for any new games, though, I'll be using 8.1; while Studio is a bit too expensive for what I'd be doing with it at this point in time.

Technically, GM 8 is obsolete, but only because newer versions exist. That doesn't mean GM8 isn't good, I love it.

I have 1 question...
Will there be Game Maker 9?
or are GM:HTML5 and GM:Studio actually GM 9/10?

There will be another major GM release. YYGs prefers to refer to it as GM:Next, they're are moving away from references to GM by version number because it creates confusion with the different platforms.

There priority currently is GM:Studio and modules and will start GM:next afterwards. GM:Next will be a complete re-design.

I make everything in GM8, then if i want to export to html5, then i use Studio, and just import my GM8 Projects.
I hate the studio interface, i hate everything about studio, it along with html5 were the worst game maker releases in my opinion. (and the ugliest).

I dont like gm-studios "startup screen", it shouldnt even exist. when i open game maker it should open right to the program just like 8.0,7,6.1 did. From there if someone wants to import or manage project folders etc they could just do it from the 'File' Menu, or yoyo could have created a "Project" menu beside the file menu.

And no one wants an auto updater, especially if it is in the way. Maybe while your working on the game, in the background game maker could silently check for updates, and if one is available a little update icon could appear beside the "Help" menu, that way you would know there is a new update available, and then one could just simply click 'install update' from the help menu.

I really hope yoyogames doesnt make the same mistakes again with the next version of gamemaker, and please, for all that is life, no more dark interface. PLLLEEAAASSSEEE.

I use GM8.0 Pro and GMHTML5. I almost always use GM8 and then convert my games when they're done, because I much prefer the GM8 interface, and GMHTML5 has these weird file-eating issues.

"no more dark interface. PLLLEEAAASSSEEE. "
