It seems like rarely who uses :GM8_new: now, and everyone switched to GM:STUDIO and GM:HTML5.
Thus I'm wondered: Is this the time when :GM8_new: becomes a history like :GM7: :GM6: :GM5: ... ?
I still have :GM8_new: and I feel like "using an old technology" but I don't know if things are really like that...

So is this true?
Or will the :GM8_new: be in use for a long time after?

If I realized it correctly there is no lite or any kind of free version of Studio, so M 8 will still be the one to cater to free users and I'm sure there's a whole bunch of them still using GM. But you're sort of right, the same idea went trough my head too. The way I see it, the best thing they could do is go with GM Studio lite, which would have only standard lite options like GM 8 Lite, and if you want HTML or iOS, Android you buy those modules. That way they'd put it all in one program again and there would be no old and new.
But I believe it's still too early to say GM is old technology.

I find gamemaker 8 the best version to work with. It does the job well and there's no buggy updater which I really find irritating.
I stick to gamemaker 8 as it gets the job done without a hassle.

8 is "old technology". 8.1 isn't.

Well, that depends on how you look at it. There are three "levels" of GameMaker. Lite, Standard and Studio: one is free, one is cheap and one is expensive. In a way, Standard is the demo for Studio.

I personally use :GM8_new:.1, but I've noticed many people seem to use :GM8_new:. I haven't noticed a significant majority using GMS or GMHTML5

Yeah, as Erik Leppen suggested, both GameMaker Standard 8.1 and GameMaker Lite 8.1 are in-date and will remain so until the ninth iteration is released.

Easy train of thought: think of Studio and HTML5 as part of the 8.1 family. They're all based on the same innards, they're just different tiers of the same product. While a lot of people will have moved up tiers from Standard to Studio (since HTML5 is now part of Studio), it depends on what you personally are looking for in the product. If you don't need, don't want, or can't afford, Studio, Lite/Standard are still there for you :)

It doesn't really matter. Technology moves too fast to catch up and I'd use it as long as it still works. ;)

Depends on how you look at it.

GM8.0 supports both GM OGRE (advanced graphics, physics, math, shaders, etc) and GM Newton (physics), so if you want to make a high-end game with GM for PC, GM8.0 is actually the best version. Compatibility with those DLLs was broken in later GM versions, unfortunately. Graphics performance in GM:STUDIO and GM:HTML5 is a joke compared to OGRE.

So if you have the skill and intelligence to handle the expert level functions DLLs allow you, GM:STUDIO and GM:HTML5 are actually the ones that are obsolete.

I'm still using 8.0, and as long as I'm playing with Gamemaker for fun, I'll stick to it.
If one day I decide to to do serious stuff with GM and try to sell stuff, I'll get Studio.

Studio is still incredibly buggy and if I didn't have a game months in the making in it I'd switch right back to 8.1. It's so bad that I have the bug tracker bookmarked.

You can still sell games made with it. So, in a way, "No".

WTF???? GM8 is NOT obsolete.

I mean, it's the freaking current standard version, and it's the cheapest. I use it all the time.

Hi, GM Standard 8.0 and GM Standard 8.1 are on my computer but I never use GM Standard 8.1. I have a question. Is GM Standard 8.1 more buggy than GM Standard 8.0.? Thanks.!

I Use 8.1, currently i have no need for studio :P! As i haven't a mac (and Iphone apps is the feature i want :P!) but yh i really wish i hadn't uninstalled Gm8 as i want to use GM OGRE however Gm8 doesn't activate with my "GM FOR WINDOWS" License key no longer works as it says its in use (probs the GM8.1) which kinda sucks but oh well lol :P!

I Also feel that Gm Studio feels a bit loose, idk what it is but GM8.1 feels like a solid bug free program, as Studio is quite new, it still feels rather loose to me, i also feel that the project popup system is a little weird, im not a huge fan of the folder based project system as everytime i want to just test something quickly without saving, it still saves anything which i suppose is good for a proper project :P! (these are just empty rants :P! Nothing killer here, i would still love to use the software, i just think it feels a little foreign to develop in, even if i change everything back to make it look like GM8 lol.)

GM8 will be "in use" for as long as people still use it. GM5, 6 and 7 are still "in use," even though they are certainly obsolete. Nothing below 8.1 is supported by YYG right now, so 8.0 is obsolete in that matter. But it still works for you, so you shouldn't worry about if other people think it obsolete. Until Windows changes in such a way that GM8 and/or its games do not function anymore, GM8 will never be fully obsolete.

As far as I know GM 8.1 isn't that buggy, but if you'd like to use external ddl's like GM OGRE (3d) and Newton Physics (and several others) I recommend you to use them in GM 8. GM 8.1 just doesn't fully support these extensions. As for studio: In my opinion it's still a heavy WIP and they've released it way to early. It is quite buggy and it doesn't feel solid at all.

Until Studio gets fixed up so bugs are hardly ever occurring, I'm sticking with 8.1 with now. Its UI and file handling is a lot nicer too, which is another plus.

You can still upload GM8.0 games to the sandbox.

I still use GM8, I was going to upgrade to 8.1 but saw everybody saying how buggy it was. I'll probably start using Studio in the future but for now, Game Maker 8 gives me everything I need.
