If you cannot tell I suck at graphic design. I have looked through tons of tutorials but I seem to be one of the programmers, not a graphic designer. If anyone can help me learn how to design simple sprites and shade I would love the help. Thanks!

Hey there! The basics are really simple to learn. Here's some tutorials and websites that can help you.

Pixel Joint Tutorial Section
Drububus' Website Tutorial Section
Marks' Pixel Art Tutorials
Derek Yu Pixel Art Tutorial
Pixelation

If you have any questions or want some constructive criticism and help feel free to post here, on Pixel-Joint, or Pixelation. Pixel-Joint and Pixelation are community websites based on solely creating and sharing pixel styled art.
Programs for creating pixel art can be anything from MSPaint, or the built in GM sprite editor, to Graphics Gale. Graphics gale is a VERY good program for creating pixel art. You could even use something such as Paint.net or Gimp(or even Adobe Photshop) all though these methods are usually unorthodox as these programs are primarily used to manipulate photos or create hi-resolution art and interfaces. Gimp and Adobe Photoshop tend to blue the edges of the pixels and use anti-aliasing as well, which is most of the time bad for creating pixel art.

If you want to create higher-resolution art I can also suggest some websites and programs to use.

-Hope this helped! :)

Kiwinuptuo of DeviantArt has a nice easy-to-follow tutorial on the basics: http://kiwinuptuo.de...o/27054576&qo=3

... she also does a few more for various areas e.g., textures and trees. :)
