Honey Badger Ninja

My son is begging me to make a game that plays like Run Roo Run. The actual D&D and/or Coding is not all that much. I can do the main function within a day I am sure. So this came to me today. A Ninja Badger who needs to flip and dive over bees/wasps/ protecting their hive at the end of the room. (Yes I know wasps dont make honey, I dont care  )

So I started development today. The concept art above is what I am going with. I have a bunch of cool looking bees/wasps to have the badger dodge.

That's great, and I'm very happy for you and the prospects of your son getting the game he wants ...

... but what is there to discuss? You are making a game about a Honey Badger Ninja. Right, topic over then, surely? Please give us something to assist you with, or there is no point in creating the topic. :)

Looks pretty awesome. I guess you could earn some cash by porting it to those cellphones everyone's using nowadays, because it's a nice mix between childish and cool.

This makes me remember the Tree Zone in Super Mario Land 2:

One of the levels are in a beehive, and there's a bunch of stuff like fat bees that land needle-first in your head and stuff in it. There's also ants that send stuff flying and a lot of other insect enemies. If you happen to have one of the original Game Boy consoles still around you should wipe it out and take a look on it for inspiration.

I would like to know that too. Even though it looks very cool, it feels like the graphics have been taken from different places.

It's nice to see that you are spitting out games all the time though, David.

I made it, but not the original graphics. If you guys are able (even just for one month) - join stock photo websites and download as many images as you can with the proper licensing for game use. dreamstime.com is a great example.

I buy most of the graphics I've used and then have edited them for my needs. For example in the above image the top of the honey badger was a completely separate image from the bottom half. I just bought both images and then spent some time editing.

People often think of stock photo sits as buying photographs but the truth is there are hundreds of graphic artist who post their work for sale.

If you want specifics - My account cost $250 a month for 25 downloads a day. They have cheaper packages so dont freak. - BUT If I want to use an image as a main playable character like the badger, I am going to have to pay an extra license fee.

So what I do is use my daily downloads to stock up on backgrounds, enemies, weapons, etc, things you dont have to pay extra for. Then when I can afford it I will buy the honey badger before I release the game.

Stock photo websites are no different than paying a graphic designer to design something for you.

Any of this making sense?

Looks like you might end up with mismatching graphics, though, if everything is by a different artist? Even that top image: if you look closely, the badger, wasp and background are all very different.

Yeah, that's what I mean. I could tell from just that image, that it wasn't made by the same artist, or at least not with the same style in mind. You would be better off just creating graphics yourself. I know some people can't do that, but at least an artist then.

EDIT: David, I don't like your logo that much (the one on your website). I would be willing to help you create a new one if you want?

Always a chance you take when "buying" images. I would say the average person would never notice, and certainly anyone who is a "non designer" would not notice.

@NicroGames - what I actually wanted instead of a bomb was a leapord gecko with the same color scheme.

I disagree that the pictures are "too different"... yes, they are slightly different (the wasp does not have as much shading, for example), but overall they match up nicely (similar line weight, both having somewhat thick outer outlines with thinner outlines on the detailed areas such as teeth... and similar colouring (as in, one's not extremely bright with the other being extremely dark, and one's not super-detailed compared to the other))

Game graphics do have the risk of having conflicting styles but that's not a problem if it's done right (as in, only choose styles similar enough to not stand out). This even happens sometimes in commercial games, for example, Zelda: 4 Swords Adventures. It uses sprites done in Four Swords style / Minish Cap style, but backgrounds done in Link to the Past style. And there's nothing wrong with the way that that game turned out since the styles go together nicely.
Now, judging by the way that this guy did the concept, I'd say he already does a good job of mixing different images without the styles clashing... if he keeps it up then the game won't look bad at all.

Ah and to further to expand on my conversation earlier; see the game in my signature called “Brain Drop”? Those zombies are playable characters so I have to buy different rights. I have not been able to afford to do so yet so that is why that game is not released even though it is ready. So that’s the only drawback I see in buying images.

There's nothing to discuss... David, any chance you could come up with a playable demo soon so I can move this to Works In Progress (where it sorta belongs)?

For anyone still following this message - my monthly account with stock images is about to expire and i have all the images I need. If you need images PM me and I will search for you and download them for you for free. The only thing i cant download for you are images you want to use as a main character. Those require different rights.

Let me know.
