I don't know if it has been said yet, but I remember that when YYG first came online, people were worried about the opposite happening - us merging with them. Kinda funny to look back upon.

Well, when YYG came online there was actually an idea to merge the GMC with YYG which makes sense, since having just one official forum is a sensible idea. That didn't happen as we know. But finally it has happened after all.

Regarding the names:

The name Game Maker tells that this is about creating games.
The name YoYoGames tells that this is about playing games.

Game Maker is now known by a lot of people, by millions actually, since millions of people have downloaded it; and many books has been written on how to make games with Game Maker, not just the books written by Mark Overmars and people working together with him, but also other books. Like in Denmark there is a book in Danish on how to make games with Game Maker which was published when GM 6.1 was around just to mention one which I happen to know because I am Danish. Game Maker was also featured in "computerspilskolen" (= the computer game school) run online by the Danish television channel DR under their section "Troldspejlet". The online Game Maker course is still there but I don't think it is updated.

So my point is just that it makes a lot of sense to keep the name Game Maker in connection with the forum.

But those who make games love that there is someone playing the games. The more the better. So the merge is a big plus I would say. I especially like that there are active admins and moderators from YoYoGames now on GMC. It is very good for mutual communication. And since Game Maker is owned by YoYoGames it does make sense that the GMC is YoYoGames' official forum. But for the reasons I mentioned above it would be great to keep the name Game Maker as part of it.
