On May 23rd (the day after GameMaker: Studio launch) our YoYo Games Forum was severely attacked. We have managed to field off attacks like this in the past but it has got to the point where it now poses a serious security risk for the rest of the site and its users. The software these forums are based on is old and obsolete, so there is no easy fix.

This has regrettably forced us into the position of closing the forums and moving everyone into the safer, and far more secure forums at the GameMaker Community. We’ve been working with the admins and moderators of the YYGF to find a solution but it’s become obvious that without the man power to dedicate to the problem, we simply can’t fix it. With everyone at YoYo Games involved in GameMaker:Studio, we simply don’t have the capacity to properly fix the security concerns at the YYGF (if it’s even possible).

So from Friday, June 1, the YYGF will be closed, and members will be asked to register at the GameMaker Community (GMC) forums. Current YYGF moderators are being invited to join the team there, and will be allowed to pick an area to help out in, and to help the rest of the YYGF community move in.

We feel this is the best solution available, and actually is a golden opportunity for both communities! The GMC has traditionally been a place for people who like to create games, while the YYGF has been a place for games players. Now it seems only logical to us, that those making games need constant feedback from experts in playing them, while gamers gain access to new games and get to give suggestions before they are released, helping them to be the blockbusters everyone wants them to be!

We’d love everyone to come and join in some of these discussions, bring a fresh perspective and show the kinds of games GameMaker is capable of making. We realise that merging the two communities will take some time and patience on both sides, but urge everyone to get involved because we here at YoYo think the potential for success is massive!

Wowaofpdoangdoi!? This should be interesting. Will the gmc's name change and will posts from the old forum be merged with the new one. this is epic. We should add a new theme to the forums that looks like the yygf's theme to celebrate!

Why change the name? It's been called the "GMC" since the beginning of GameMaker. That name is recognizable both inside, and outside, the GM user community.

Besides, the two forums didn't exactly "merge". You simply closed one and told its members to join the GMC -- and that's fine. The GMC needed new blood.

But it's still the same forum, with the same goals and common interest. So why change the name?

What could make it more clear that these are the official forums of the community behind the Game Maker product than the current name: Game Maker Community? "Official Community Forums for Game Maker by YoYoGames" doesn't have quite the same appeal ...

Well then, the only thing I could suggest would be "YoYoGames Community".

Wowsers, I certainly was not expecting the end of that forum to come so soon. It was only a week ago that the hacker attacked. Ah, the memories we will lose when it closes...

Actually, I have a question. When the YYGF are "closed", will it be taken down completely, or just permanently locked? I know there are several old users who would want to keep the forums, even if they can't use them, so they can keep the memories they made there, almost like a scrapbook.

Several users are in the process of archiving the forums onto their computers, but I fear they won't have nearly enough time to do so if they are going close in less than two days.

Also, I vote "Yoyogames Community" for the new name.

i have been pushing for the YoYo Games Community too... Although my personal favorite is the YoYo Games Big Happy Family Of GameMaker Developers and Good Game Players Community Forums... The YYGBHFOGDAGGPCF for short...

Okay... few good questions in there.

• Why the rebranding?
  With this becoming the sole forums for YoYo Games, we feel it needs to stated clearly at the top that this is the case. If SHOULD be mentioned that it's only really the banner at the top that is to change. We'll leave the gmc.yoyogames.com domain, but we will forward forum.yoyogames.com and forums.yoyogames.com to here as well.
• Will you take suggestions from the community?
  We'll be posting a new topic about this in the very near future. We don't plan of having a "vote" or anything, but will ask for ideas.
• Will the YYGF be closed, or taken down "completely"?
  We have looked to see if it can be "locked", but the way it's written, it HAS to come down. So we will be archiving it, and removing it.

You might be trying to push your brand identity with the company name, but the fact remains that GameMaker is the central point of the company. People coming to the forums are much more likely to come for things related to GM than YYG. Why change the name if GMC describes the forums so much better?

The forum "merger" is good for both communities in my view. We get their awesome members , they get our amazing community and better forum software.

I don't see what you could rebrand the forum other than YoYo Games [ Community ] Forum and still have the name describe what the place is.
