GameMaker has up and decided to consistently run at a low frame rate on my laptop. No matter how many objects are in a room--even if it's empty--GameMaker runs at an average of 15 fps.

This isn't the first time this problem has came up for me. The last time it happened, I tried everything to fix it--no luck... Oddly enough, I managed to get different low fps averages based on how many USB devices were plugged into my laptop, the highest being around 22fps. Regardless, I never got it working at 100% capacity... until I created a new Windows User and migrated everything over to the new profile. Just like that GameMaker ran smoothly regardless of what I threw at it. I honestly have no idea what could be causing this issue. Windows 7 doesn't lag when a GM .exe is running--everything besides the game runs smoothly. I had been using GM for 6-8 months before this problem first came up.

My specs are as follows:

|Alienware M11x R2
Windows 7 64bit
Intel Core i5 CPU U 520 1.07GHz
NVIDIA Geforce 355m - 1gb
4gb of RAM

My only hope is if someone here has any possible ideas to fix this. I'd prefer not to employ a temporary fix like I did before.

Thank you.

hi, i had a m11x r2 just like yours(my was bluescreening loads and after months, i got a replacement sent yesterday r3), i have not had this problem, but it sounds like a windows problem running too many processes, the 1 downfall of that laptop if the cpu is tiny my new one is 1.6ghz which is 60% more not including turbo. So id recomend cealing up the laptop removing unwanted softare and background processes, if your HDD is quite full remove some stuff(slows pc down), make sure the game is running on with nvdia not the intel gpu. defrag the pc, check for virusses and ultimately restore factory setting if the rest doesnt work

check when the game is running how much cpu and ram usuage your game is using and how much is running total

edit: 2 easy things, clean out tmp folders and reinstall game maker it may be "clogged up"

Did you try restarting your computer? Sometimes GM games (like anything) will lag if your RAM is all twisted and used up or if they're are some heavy processes open.

If you are consistantly having poor performance under one user and not another on the same machine, the likely cause is a program that is running on the poorer performing users login.

Go through the RUN registry keys for the poor performing user and disable or delete them. You'll likely find that one of programs that is starting up at login time is the problem.

NPT might be on to something, but I always need to mention this when someone is having these types of consistently low performance problems with all GM games.

There's a bug with joysticks that causes every GM game to run slower. I haven't tested to see if it's been fixed in Studio yet or not, but it definitely still exists in 8.1. I'm not saying this is the problem, but it is something that affects everybody, and a lot of people don't even realize it exists. If you've plugged in a joystick/gamepad device at any point, any GM game will just slow down, for no reason at all on our end.

It's just one of those things to be on the lookout for and test to see if it's actually part of the problem in any way. It should be on everybody's GM slow performance checklist.

@GStick: I think you may have located the source of the problem. I'm remembering back to the time this first happened, and it was actually when I was trying to implement Xbox 360 Controller support into the game I'm currently making. I had gotten it working no sweat and set up a fun little 4-player deathmatch scenario, but shortly thereafter this problem first started showing up.

Any suggestions? Do you think clearing the existence of the 360 controller drivers will solve the problem?

Edit: I'm almost 100% sure it isn't any problem with processors or RAM being tangled up... here's a screenshot of the task manager during full gameplay of my game, Stasis. Restarting doesn't fix the issue.

Well, when it happens usually the way I've gotten it to stop is to unplug all controllers and make sure no special driver-related software is running if required (like MotioninJoy or something similar), and then do a full restart and try running a GM game. If that works, that might be your problem...

Seth52, I have the same problem. I talk about tearing animation and of course about fps.
The problem will not be solved, or will be solved too late. It's not difficult to solve.
I have written here: GameMaker 8.1 Update
You have to do what I am forced to do. I bought GameMaker 8.1 before the launching of GameMaker: Studio and Now I feel cheated.
Not even the possibility to upgrade from Gamemaker 8.1 to GameMaker: Studio (Only compilation for Windows OS).
If the people from yoyo games, If they knew about the launching of GameMaker: Studio, they would have to remove GameMaker 8.1 from store website or to warn visitors about a new version of GameMaker. And I would have been notified about GameMaker: Studio.

Now I sit and watch at GameMaker 8.1 and I cannot believe, I look at it, but I feel like I have no Gamemaker 8.1, I have to start over again, I mean, to buy GameMaker again.

The solution? You need to buy GameMaker: Studio. You must forget about GameMaker 8.1 - By the way, I do not know when you bought GameMaker 8.1, but, You know what is my anger? I bought GameMaker 8.1 close to the release of GameMaker: Studio.
If I were bought GameMaker 8.1 in 2011, for example, I would not be upset now. BUT, But in this case NOW I'm upset.

I hope not to remove the entire forum board, cause of my message. Why say that? Usually it happens to me. I was fooled with various software. I wrote my problem on the forum or on site and my message was removed or the entire forum board. Deleting Forum were only two exceptions.

Have a wonderful day, if you can. ;)

P.S. If you can not give possibility to upgrade from Gamemaker 8.1 to GameMaker: Studio (Only compilation for Windows OS), give me my money back, and I will add the difference of money, approximately $60 and I'll buy GameMaker: Studio. But this exception to be made only to those who bought Gamemaker 8.1 close to the release of GameMaker: Studio. In this way everyone will be happy. :)

GM8.1 is a seperate product! they plan to continue to sell both and GM:next(or 9) will have multiple versions for different costs -lite(assuming they still make a free one), standard(think 8.1) and studio in a modular fashion. there were posts everywhere saying you would be able to upgrade from html5 to studio so you should have bought that instead as there hasnt been mention of upgrading standard as its still a product. why did you buy it, you should have been patient or just be happy with 8.1

try help desk if you must try and get a refund
