Masters of Game Maker
The moment you've all been waiting for is here, folks. The judges have finished, and a winner has been determined. There were five entries in all, and none of them fell short of expectations. Choosing a winner was exceedingly difficult. And let me tell you, when I say that, I mean it literally. I'll be honest with you all. One of the games wouldn't play on one of the judge's computers, so that screwed up the whole scoring system. In the end, it was decided that that judge's score would be considered 0, which would be removed from the average as the highest and lowest scores for each game are removed before averaging. This was a difficult decision to make. That game still did pretty good on the final charts though. Now, enough ranting, you're here to see who won, right?

Again, this was a very difficult competition, and the fact that these competitors even made and submitted a game is proof enough of their programming prowess. Congratulations to all competitors.

Spoiler

Welcome to the Masters of Game Maker competition. This is a game making competition with extreme restrictions. In short, you must make a good game with one object and one room.
...
...
If you're still reading this, that didn't deter you. Maybe you have what it takes. Read on for more details.

Restrictions
1. You must use no paths, timelines, or tilesets (non-tileset backgrounds are permitted).
2. You may have no more than one object in your game.
3. Your game must contain exactly one room, in which is exactly one instance of the one object.
4. You may only use the Game Start, Step, and Draw events.
5. You may not use Trigger events.
6. You may not use any DLLs or Extension Packages in your game. (EDIT: On request, the SurfaceFix extension package is permitted in this competition. Note that only the surface fixing part of the extension can be used. None of the new functionality that SurfaceFix adds is permissible.)
7. You may not create or destroy instances, objects, or rooms in your game.
8. You may not alter resources in your game.
9. You may not run external executable files in your game.

Judges
If you want to be a judge, you can request such here. I'll be taking judges on a first-come-first-serve basis, and there will be five judges in all, including myself.
1. Mercerenies
2. TerraCrafter
3. Exkakx
4. DarkEgo
4. PixelKing
5. ClubsDeuce
(6. Yopenatal)
(7. Debels)

Scoring
Games will be scored by the following criteria:
0-10 points for Creativity
0-10 points for Appearance (graphics, interface, sound, etc.)
0-10 points for Elaborateness
0-10 points for Gameplay (is it fun?)
0-10 points for Judge's Opinion (did the judge like it?)
Each game will end up with five composite scores of ?/50 points. A game's final composite score will be determined by removing its highest and lowest scores and then averaging the other three.

Rules
-Each participant can submit exactly one game.
-Games must be made individually. All images, sounds, etc. in a game must be made by the creator.
-All games must conform to the restrictions listed above. A game that breaks a restriction will be rejected.
-Games must not connect to the Internet for any purpose.
-Games must be started after the official start date of the competition and turned in before the official end date.
-Judges are permitted to submit a game, but they will not judge their own game. It will simply have one less score to average in. (EDIT: After some careful consideration and feedback from other members, this rule is being revoked. Judges may not submit games.)

Dates
Signups start immediately.
Game making will start at the end of the day on Sunday May 6 (I will post to officially denote this).
All submissions must be in by the end of the day on Sunday July 1 (Again, I will post to officially denote this).

Joining
To join, simply post here saying that you wish to join. There will be no cap on participants; any number of people may join.

Submission
When you complete your game, upload the GMK to any hosting site and PM me a link to it. I must have the GMK so I can check the restrictions. I will not share the GMK, and the other judges will receive a compiled EXE form of it. Also, I need the game in GMK, not GM81 format. If you wish to make your game in GM8.1, you may do so and then convert it using a utility such as this before submitting. The GMK should be the name of the game, a hyphen, and then the creator's username. For instance, "Click the Clown - Exkakx.gmk".

Rule Changes
Here is a list of amendments to the above. Anything that has been changed since this topic's creation will be documented here, so you needn't reread the entire post in order to look for new content.
•Judges may no longer submit games as participants.
•Scripts are no longer forbidden from use.
•The naming method for games has been defined. Submitted GMK files should be named the following: "Name Of Game - Username of Creator.gmk".
•The SurfaceFix extension has been allowed.

Now, technically, we do not permit competitions to be held on these forums... However, I think that due to the circumstance we should be flexible about this and that since you have already started then it should definitely be allowed to finish. I will also move this for you into the Community section of the forum as I think this is of interest to everybody... Posted Image

I would also like to say that if this has been a regular event over at the YYGF and you wish to maintain that here then please, PM me so we can talk about it and come to some arrangement. There is the GMC Jam here which is a 72 hour game making competition, and it has a great following, which makes me think that this could be worthwhile promoting as well, especially due to the extreme challenge it presents!

Ah. Well I apologize if I'm breaking rules here, but I appreciate you letting this finish.

And to answer your question, no this is not a regular thing; it's a one-time event. Once this finishes this July, it'll be over.

Hmm... Well it may be worthwhile talking about as I for one really like the idea of an "extreme" game making compo! Lets hope this all goes well and we can see about maybe doing it again (if you are interested of course)... Oh and let me know if I can help out!

That's definitely worth considering. And if you want to help out, I can put you down as a backup judge (i.e. if one of the current five judges quits or is busy).

I've been following this contest since it started back on YYGF, and I have to say out of any contests I've seen on those forums, it surely was the most unique and (without a doubt) the most challenging one I'd seen.

It's a little late for me to enter, but I will be closely following this as I have been. In fact, if you need a backup judge or someone else to help out, I'm willing to assist. And in the event competitions like this become regular, I will definitely participate in a later iteration.

Best of luck to the participants!

Hm... it sounds like some people are wanting to join now. Given the circumstances with the migration and everything, would anyone be terribly opposed to me pushing the end date back... say four weeks?

I don't think so at the moment... yours is scheduled to start in June, whereas this one has already started which was the main reason I decided to permit it. However, as this is an unforseen situation let me ask around for opinions on how we could work this so that you guys can keep these things going in some way.

The starting date is that because I didn't wanted to create conflicts with the Masters of GM comp.

O_O!

This comp looks awesome!, Here at GMC users are boring and don't do comps like this D: (no intention offense :P)

I think I'm going to enter and since i like to make things hard I'm going to create a game with a lot of "rooms" in 1 room (I'm not 100% sure i will enter the comp)

edit: Is there a limit of sprites?

Nope. If the restrictions in the OP don't list it, you can do as much as you want with it, so any number of sprites is fine.
