The P0rtal universe is one that has lots of great ideas that can be used in other ways. My idea here is a game focused entirely around gels, somewhat likeTag? While "White" gel would be useless without the gun, what other gels besides propulsion, repulsion, and adhesion could be made? If you have ideas and/or colors, tell me! A great platform game could be made with just a paint gun.

IIRC, Valve had five different gels they were going to use, but two of them got scrapped for not being fun enough and providing too-confusing of game play. I'm not sure adding more gels is the way you want to go.

EDIT: Then again, a slo-mo gel might be a neat addition. It kind of only has one use, but it still stretches the game play some.

Tag's "adhesion" gel was scrapped form Portal for being complicated, so that might be something to avoid...what were the other two gels?

By the way, if you're suggesting "friction" gel, how would it be used?

Electric gel? Could be used to short-circuit electric appliances, or used to channel electric power between a power source and something that has lost power. And to lay traps to fry enemies.

You should also have a gel that floats, using it makes it possible to pass water bodies (or acid, or other fluids).

Explaination? Like, what would psychic gel do? Would HEAVY gel be heavy, make stuff heavy, or play heavy metal music?

The third one, obviously. And your electric gel idea is great.

Mirror gel, a gel that reflects light?
Magnet gel, that attracts metal?

Most extra gels are going to require something other than the play to interact with it, such as light and metal...

I think the problem with this topic is that we're making suggestions for an unknown game. It's very hard to come up with good elements if we have no context to compare them to, so for instance we can't tell if an idea is good (suitable) or not in the current state.

Should we agree upon a FPS/FPP (First Person Platformer) game for a start?

Let's agree on 2D, as my 3d skills are not up to par. Unless anyone else likes the idea.

Seriously, haven't you read my signature? I've made a first-person 3D collisions engine called YaruFPS and I'm sure I tell someone about it in about every 10th post I make. If you have Standard but just aren't good with 3D, you should try messing around with it a bit. Adding the gels might be a bit on the difficult side, though, but if you just allow them to stick on walls, floors and ceilings it should be fairly easy to find out what type of surface it hit by analyzing the movement from previous position to collision position, and then just create a "splashedGel" object at the right place. Could also make corner objects that are invalid for gel splashes if you're bothered with splashes sticking out of the walls.

My 3d is okay but basic. I only am very good at the traditional doom-esque type of games and I can just manage varying elevation levels. Plus, I already figured out a fairly realistic paint-physics engine in 2d.

I'd like to make a note that there is a very high hypothetical level about such a game. I'm just messing around with liquid physics and paint.

Yal, your engine is awesome though.
