I started programming when I was 12.. Almost 7 years ago.. First language I learned was GML..

Next year I'll be in college for game programming. I plan to program for a living, game programming preferred of course but it's not really in demand as opposed to many other types of programming. I could've gone with general computer science or software development, but I prefer game programming more and I figure it's one of the more impressive kinds of programming to do, so I could probably apply what I learned in other fields of computer science as well :).

So I'm curious, how has game development been a part of your past and how do you think it'll be a part of your future?

It will always be a part of my life. I found GM probably around 4 years ago, and I'm 15 years old now. Since then I've had a bit of experience with other programming languages, but I still prefer to code in gml. I know, as a fact, that programming will be more then a hobby for me (and already is), so I will most likely get to work as a programmer. Even though programming is that important for me, I think it can get boring at times, so I've gotten pretty good at drawing too. That's also why I want to make games by myself or at the most a small team of 2-4 people. (Indie FTW! )

Right now I'm working on an android game. It's wrapping up, so I guess it'll be released in the near future (A couple of weeks maybe?) and I hope this game will make some money, not because I'm in need of money, but because it will show that I have what it takes, to make games as a career sometime.

Probably as a hobby, and as practice for business management and whatnot. Posted Image I love GM, though I only started recently.

I plan to use my talent for a future career, but chances are I won't get that far with it... maybe make a few dollars on the side, but nothing enough to put bread on the table.

Edit: My first Language I first used (aside from html/js/vbs was the language that Adventure Maker uses, but it doesn't have a name that I'm aware of... the forum calls it vbscript, but it is much more like Visual Basic than vbs...

And about a year later I discovered what GM could do, I started off using the highest version of it that was free and could create exe, which was v4.3. Then I downloaded an illegal full of Gm:8.0 and 7.0 Back then I didn't know it was illegal. When I found out it was an illegal copy I instantly deleted them and bought myself a legal copy of GM 8.1 When Html5 came out I bought it roughly a week or two later. And here I am now I have studio :D I know what you guys are thinking, cool story bro ;p anyway I've been using GM since a few days before 8.1 came out.

I discovered Game Maker around... 8 months ago I think. I create games as a hobby, but when I grow up I'll become a serious programmer (with C++). And of course I know HTML. I was going to buy GM:HTML5, so I'll get GM:Studio Base + HTML5 for free, so I asked my cousin to buy it for me and then pay her. But her boyfriend suggested that I should start learning HTML and C++ instead of GML. I followed his suggestion and started learning these languages, but I won't leave Game Maker. I will use GM, until I become an adult. GM is a great program for begginers. MUCH MUCH easier that C++. But of course GM is not a program for professional programmers.

Not true! How dare you say that?
There is nothing wrong with GM (besides some bugs and such, of course), as long as you stay in 2D and you know what you are doing. GM is easy, fast and its speed is not too bad either. If you want to work on a big team though, I have to admit that you are right. Blizzard will not want you if you don't even know c++, unless you have some other talents, like drawing.

I never said that something is wrong with GM. I just said that it is not professional. C++ is way better than GM, but way harder. Someone who wants to create games uses GM. Someone who wants to create programs uses C++ (or some other languages). But someone who want to create games like World of Warcraft, League of Legends or Diablo, will use C++. Maybe in the future GM will reach C++. I use GM, because I want to create simple games and because it is easy, but in the future I plan to use C++, because I want to create games like these I mentioned before. I repeat, GM is a great tool for making games and there's not something wrong with it.

No tools are professional, it's the person using it that either is or isn't, but I see. If that's the kind of games you want to make, then go for it, and good luck!
Anyways, I got the impression that you wanted to create games like WoW and LoL by yourself? That's not realistic, if that's what you are thinking.

EDIT: Sorry for going a bit off-topic here, chris.

2005 was my birth into gml. did a tut here and there. I learned through making games. I would read the manual on my time off and learn what gml could do. I had a ton of game ideas too and that helps

My way of thinking of Gm is like a hobby. If i want to make games (and programs) for living i would go to C++.

I really love making video games and one day hope I can get a job as a lead game designer.

Edit: Why so many downvotes?

I discovered Game Maker a little over a year ago from a friend.
C# is my "professional" tool of choice, but I really use GML for almost everything.
I even wrote a couple programs to help with my math homework in GML!

They aren't mutually exclusive! I'm an adult, I pay rent and bills and choose my own bed time just like a real adult, I even have a career that has nothing to do with game developing.

I still make games though, because it's fun.

I downloaded Game Maker for the first time a sunny morning in 2004. The 17th of May to be precise. The reason I remember the date was that I wanted to spend the day with Game Maker rather than celebrating our constitution day. :P

I was actively learning more and more about Game Maker until I grew a bit tired of it in 2007. I have on several occations attempted to take it up, but failed, and now I have an extremely long summer break; I'm in my third week of it and my university course doesn't start before the 24th of September. (University of Bath; Computer Systems Engineering)

Right now I am about to embark on an ambitious project; an RPG-ish game for both android and PC, which should be simple to understand, because mobile games should never really be complicated as you should be able to put them away for weeks and still be able to pick it up without struggeling.

I think I will always keep Game Maker as a hobby along with music (I'm a bassist and a wannabe composer) and my career in engineering. Hopefully my ambitious project will be finished after a few years...

I discovered game maker about 1 year ago when I was looking for a program that could make a game like runescape. I read a forum post that they vused their program tro make it. Then i found an otherone and was talking about other stuff then it showed GM. I was in sixth grade and I was scared to download stuff without my dad knowing(witch is pathetic and funny to think about) so I waited for my dad. He said ok and i found a tut to make a breakout game that i made. It had 10 levels. I made way better after that. After I found one that said I to make a pong game. It had 3 different difficultie levels. Then i used the game maker tuts to make the fruit game that I published(btw I published all of them) and then the scroll shooters game witch I published in beta because I did not finish it and never will.

Then it was the summer and stop making games. At the start of this school year in middle school. I learned css and html with my friend. I made couple websites(sicnargames.com, 7carrefour for my grade) Between me and my friend kept asking questions about the languages(By this i mean that he asked me css questions and I asked html questions). Then in march or something I started learning gml because i wanted to make a math game for my math teacher. so I went over to game development and he went to website builging. He is always working on his dominoe videos website(Don't know if you know it but it's:sebbvideo) Now im working on math nika my math platformer game.(My first gml, platformer and no using tuts game! It's looking to be a nice game)

I can't wait to know what will happen in eighth grade next year
