hi,

I've never been such a great spriter and there are people out there who can offer some advice/critiscism to me :)

This is made from a range of tiles I created, and it seems to me something is wrong though I can't quite pinpoint what it is.

From what i can see:

Good things - you can't see the grid very much (which is what you are supposed to try to eliminate when making a tileset)

Bad things - too small amount of shades makes it look... unreal. If you add in maybe 1 more? (unless you are going for that style)

- the water (i assume that's what it is) is kinda jagged. Change that would be good (unless you are going for that style).

- no variation. Maybe add in either cracks in the bricks, or random objects, such as boxes and similar things.

That's my opinon. If you want to keep your current style, atleast add in some variation in the tileset, as it is very repetetive. Hope this helps :)

cracks, should there just be a selection of cracks in the tileset? I should be ale to do that :P

I've been doing some more spriting:

(not finished)

and:

(also not finished, just trying to make some different things)

So there are definitely things to improve (there always are) so any critiscism is quite welcome :)

I really like that second one...
First one I don't like so much... it just looks too "artificial". Perhaps it's a style thing (and I just don't like it)

I would lower the saturation of the first image. Normally you want the objects to stand out from the background scenery. For example, you wouldn't want a wall to be on the same depth level as, say, a picture. You would want the picture to stand out from the wall. Here's what it looks like compared to the original. I thought you had the tiles way to bright and way too much saturation.

I might even lower it even more.

-Cheers!

At the gold-ish brick road (please tell me if i miss-understood again :D ), there are two mayor flaws:

1, as Jster391 said, you can differ the edges that much, which is needed.

2, i think it would be hard on the eyes with such bright colours if it tiles on a large area, for example a entire city. Might just be personal preferance, but... yeah...

I actually think Jster's solution is very good, but I want to reconsider if i'll just lower the saturation or recolor it entirely?

I would personally do both. Lower the saturation just a little bit and redo the colors into a dark more eye-pleasing color. If you want I can redo it for you.

thanks very much, but no. I want to learn to do it myself :)

but anyway, I wanted the color to be light, almost gold-ish. say I still want this, how should I do that?

Make the colors lighter and not as contrasting to each other. You could even make them darker but you would still need to change the difference between the colors.

There is a slight difference in the second and third edit but it is noticeable.
