Refreshing Surfaces

I just started using surfaces. I have this one surface, and every step I call "draw_clear_alpha(0,0);" to clear out the surface.
But when I restart the room, or even restart the game, the old surface stays in place and won't update. Why?

Put surface_free(surface_name) in the room_end event.

well, with the current information one just have to take a guess..

you have to set it as target, clear it, then free target so it is not drawn on anymore..

is this your current setup?
