well i have not seen a game like tom clancy or grand theft auto or call of duty made by game maker i would recommend Visual Studios 2010 if you need some help with the coding of that PM me

BUT...

i am not saying game maker is crap just saying it works alot more on 2D games and basic games but to make a big game use the program i recommended because GM (game maker) works for beginners i guess you could call it a teacher

if you need help with any of the programs PM me i can help i am a professional game maker and i do everything hopefully my tips help :D you can also find more vids on this stuff on youtube

BUT your question was is there a book about GM coding yes there is its all about GM its by Mark Overmars and some other guy but i don't think it has made it to alot of schools but for scripting with out the assist of a program requires a bit of work it is much easier to remember i know how to make a website off heart can make one in 5 - 15 minutes

When I was in school, back in 2009, GM was touched on, but rather lightly (the teacher didn't have any experience with it, so it was very lax).

A matter of months ago, GM:HTML5 was commented as being one of the tools available for development of HTML5 applications (aimed at gaming) in my HCI course in uni. However, the program was never used, nor investigated (the aim was to learn HTML5, CSS3, and JS; not the tools themselves). Within my mobile development course, GM is never mentioned. Eclipse was used as the main IDE for developing for Android. Previous programming studies and development, GM has had little involvement.

Hence, for me, GM wasn't around.

However, with the increased availability of cross-platform capability, I believe more educational institutions will take interest in using it as a IDE. However, you may have to take into account the costs. There are a few alternatives to GM which will end up being cheaper to both get and maintain. It'll depend on how YYG wants to charge people for it's use, and any legal complications with providing it to students.

Do to time constraints on the course, most Game and Web Development programs only deal with a few specific game development tools. Game Maker and Game Salad (For Mac users) are seen as relativity self teaching development tools.

Basically, You learn the basics of coding in class and are expected to teach yourself additional tools and expand your skills on your own.

Sadly, the actual teaching of the inner secrets of game making tools are left to the community which supports the tools.

In my technology class we used GameMaker for the "Video Game Design" module. We had a huge homemade book made using laminated pages and held in a binder that explained in good detail and lots of color pictures how to build the GM6.1 tutorial games. It was pretty nicely made.

In Denmark there is a school that teaches 3D computer graphics (the type of graphics you can see in the Shrek movies). Even it is about 3D graphics the students were assigned a task to make a little 2D game in order to learn certain things. So they were told to download the lite version of Game Maker in order to do the task. As far as I remember it was the time when GM6 was around. I know because someone on the course asked me about some things in Game Maker, since I have experience with that.

I took a class at the university level for GameMaker back a few years ago and we used The Game Maker's Apprentice and I thought it worked well. In fact I work at a K-12 school district and we have one or two students who do an independent study to learn GameMaker and we use the same book. One student recently finished it rather quickly so we purchased The GameMaker Companion which just came out last year. It added a nice filler to the basic of the original book.
