I haven't been using Game Maker since version 7, I was wondering if support for specular maps and normal maps has been added to the already supported diffuse maps, or if they go by some other name in this engine and I was previously unaware of the support.

Thanks

No, they are not supported natively. You'll need a DLL for that, for example GM OGRE. (note that GM OGRE is not supported by 8.1, and you'll have to use 8.0)

Specular maps and normal maps are not supported by GM (at least not at the moment).

One important change in GM 8.1, however, was the support for using surfaces simultaneously with 3D mode, which allows fast real-time manipulation of textures. This can be used to fake effects such as specular and normal mapping.

GM doesn't support it. If you use GM8.0, you can take a look at my GM OGRE example. One of the materials there has specular and normal mapping with a fancy light flying around it.
