<list>

My advice is to avoid anything by Hobby Press. Often their books are just rehashes of the manual, along with "tips" that are so obvious they aren't worth discussing. But I see our own Uriel Griffin (ugriffin) has a book coming out later this month (May 31, 2012): "The Game Maker 8 Cookbook". (I suppose it's too late to remove that space in GameMaker).

Just kidding. Good luck with that.

Agree with chance - I would approach some of those with high degrees of skepticism, especially for the prices they are offering them at; use the 'Look Inside' feature and do read the reviews!

I'm interested to see how ugriffin went about publishing this. I know a lot more people are able to self-publish nowadays through eBooks etc., but I haven't heard of Packt Publishing before. *Comes back a few minutes later* Okay I've answered the question for myself: http://authors.packtpub.com/

Packt Pub were looking for someone to write it, and I agreed to do it. So I'm in the dark as much as you guys when it comes to *pitching* ideas to them, hehe.

Interesting. So they contacted YoYoGames looking for potential authors? And you volunteered?

(I'm just curious... none of my business of course.)

Hello,

The table of contents of your book is not shown on Amazon website. Can you ask Amazon to show table of contents and several pages of your book? oh....I have one more question. I am curious. Would you mind disclosing the income from the publisher? Thanks.

I hope that this book will be very successful..YES!!!!!!

I own both the Game Maker's Apprentice and Game Maker's companion and they are both excellent.

If you've no idea where to start with GameMaker then Apprentice is fantastic, with chapters on design and every more difficult (but more fun!) game projects. It finishes with a completely GML project.

Companion primarily focuses on platformers, but does a good job of introducing more depth into your games by focusing on elements such as game narratives. My only criticism of this book is that they've already introduced GML in the first book, but then do two projects (one of which is pretty challenging) in D&D.

Regardless they are probably the top two coding books I own and are very much recommended.

Hope this helps,
Sondar

The Game Maker 8 Cookbook looks interesting, I just hope it's not falling too far behind Studio in relevance.

With GameMaker:Next, and the proposed changes to GML, a serious book on coding would be very welcome for those looking for more advanced info, perhaps a GML Cookbook as a followup.

The Game Maker's Apprentice is a great introduction! The only problem I have with it is that it is aimed at GameMaker 6 and the resource projects wont work. If you follow the tutorials you dont need the project files. The included resource files are great and the download extras is also good references. The book is written very nicely an not technical. I just would like to get a collection of all the changes (and patches) from GameMaker 6 to GameMaker 8.1.141.11549.

Does the GameMaker 8 cookbook teach 3-D and online programming? I know it said that the stuff could be "applied" to online and 3-D games but does it actually teach those two topics?

Are you also intersted in extending the functionality Of Game Maker by using dlls , library files and exteranl packages ?
