Hello, my team is developing an online game and we ran across a debate. Is it best to begin just making the entire game single player, then adding in multiplayer option (it is an RPG game by the way). Or should we just begin with an online engine and work up from there?
Single Player to MMO or no?

either way design your CODE
if you sit down and design the code so it can be added apon or change sections easilly it wont be too bad. but id go for multiplayer then single player if your using the same objects

For me, multiplayer always comes first.
Implementing Mplay functions is very confusing once you created the game as a single player, and 39dll - well, just don't.

I would design the multiplayer aspect first, especially if you haven't done much 39dll before. It's important to have a good grasp on that, but as for myself, I like breaking an online game into modules, and creating the game code and online code for each module at a time. But it's good to have an online base to build off of, I would search for an engine with login and registration features in addition to chatting and then build each module off of that, depending on what you want to do.
If you have any specific questions don't hesitate to pm me about it. I also have some links to some good multiplayer engines in the "about" part of my profile.
