Introduction:

Traversia is a game that's sort of like Animal Crossing...You can plant flowers, saplings, and other objects, as well as fish and catch bugs. When the game is complete, you'll be able to farm, have your own house with furniture, and lots more.

Controls:

  • Mouse - Move Cursor
  • Left Mouse Button - Move/Enter
  • Right Mouse Button - Use Item/Interact
  • Mouse Wheel - Scroll through items

Credits:

  • RhysAndrews for the Game Cave Effects Engine 3 (Used for the splash screen in all of my games).
  • Zekka for the amazing music in the game.
  • SuperMarioMaster91 for the base player sprites. He's a friend of mine, and made them a while back. I just spruced them up a bit. :D
  • Nintendo for the sound effects for The Legend of Zelda (Placeholders until I can make my own sound effects)

Other Comments:

Sort of going with a simplistic style with this. Not really sticking to any specific spriting/palette or anything, but yeah.

The game takes some elements from games like Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon, where you can plant flowers, trees, etc., as well as fish, catch bugs, and just roam around.

The game also has weather (Rain/snow/sun), as well as the 4 seasons. It's just a fun little game to play when you want to relax...

There aren't many bugs or fish yet, as I didn't have time to add everything I wanted, but I'm going to continue developing this after the Jam as well. When I continue developing it, I'm going to make it more like Animal Crossing/Harvest Moon, with houses, farming, etc.

Some other things I should note:

When the cursor is red, that means you can't use the item you have out. You can save your game by going to the save pad near the end of the river and pressing the right mouse button. I'm going to have this stuff explained in-game eventually.

Also, there's a cool little surprise if you wait on the title screen for a while. ;)

Bump. :/ I was hoping for at least some feedback...

Anyways, here's a preview of things to come:

Posted Image

As you can see, I've added a house, as well as improved the clock. Inside the house, there'll be places to view the fish/bugs you've caught, sleep to advance the time by 12 hours (You'll only be able to sleep again after 12 more hours pass), and a lot of other stuff.

And here comes the long awaited feedback!

The presentation was nice, although the amazingly sci-fi, in-your-face logo stood out in odd contrast with the game itself. The movement was smooth and the graphics were nice. It's just really hard to tell what the game will be like when it's done because, aside from movement, there are no game mechanics whatsoever. I guess you could plant flowers... but even that was weird because for some reason I could plant a flower on this patch of grass here, but couldn't on this identical patch of grass right next to it. No idea why.

One problem I have with the graphics was that the trees were the same green as the grass, so it made the terrain look rather flat. Changing the hue of the trees slightly would help immensely.

Fine work, good sir! You have yourself a smooth engine and a pleasant graphics style. Keep up the work!

Sci-fi logo? Seemed more fantasy to me, which is what I was aiming for. I found the font through a Minecraft texture pack that used it for banners and stuff, and in a way, my game's graphical style is loosely based off of it as well (Light chartreuse for foliage, bright, yet not extremely saturated colors, etc.).

Anyways, the game, when complete, will sort of have a mix of Animal Crossing (Gardening, fishing/bug catching), Rune Factory/Harvest Moon (Farming, exploration, and possibly fighting), and possibly Minecraft as well (Infinite exploration, if I ever find a way to do that, and possibly survival as well). If I had to give it a single genre though, I'd say Exploration.

As for item placement, when your cursor is red, you can't use/place whatever item you have selected. But, when it's white, you can. In your case, the cursor was either too close to the player, or too far away.

Also, I'll see what I can do about the trees, although I think I'm just going to end up keeping them the same, as it look nice IMO.

----

EDIT: Since I can't make a new post yet, and I doubt anyone else will post before I'm allowed to bump, figured I'd just edit this...

I change the spring and summer trees to be a bit lighter (color-wise), and it looks a lot nicer now.

In terms of content, I've added pine and willow trees, as well as making dead trees their own type of tree. I've also added ferns, which if I added terrain generation, they'll appear in areas with pine trees.

I added another little surprise that I don't want to reveal yet, although it can already be seen elsewhere in this thread. ;)

----

EDIT2: Here's a screenshot with willow and pine trees just for the heck of it...

Bump. Not exactly 48 hours yet (Only 47), but oh well.

Started working on farming. Currently, there's only wheat crops, but I'll be adding tomatoes, turnips, carrots, and all kinds of other vegetables.

Okay, well after playing it, I love the idea, but here's my input:

Music: I don't really know how to even describe it other than repetitive. It's not really happy or calming or anything, just kind of there, and annoying.

Art: the 8-bit style is awesome. But like previously stated, the trees lack depth and are just too barren looking. The Pine trees might also need some better detail and shading. Also, I don't really understand what the cursor is supposed to be. It's a oval, but I'm still not sure if its supposed to add a feeling of depth or what...

Gameplay: It's pretty good i guess, nothing really too it yet. I can see where you are going with the screen shift I guess. It seems similar to animal crossing, I just dont know why if you change screens by walking to the edge of it, the camera starts at the bottom of the map and shifts up to you. Also, I noticed that you said that you'd like to combine Minecraft with an Animal Crossing/Harvest moon type game. Honestly, these two games are really similar. AC/HM deal with NPC interaction. Intense NPC interaction, and also staying in one place really. Minecraft is more about exploring vast worlds and building solo....it just seems like the ideas of the two conflict with each other, and blending it would just be unpleasant. Also I agree that the title logo does look a bit extravagant for your game, as it really doesn't appear to have any fantasy elements present (at least not yet). Also, the actual name of the game makes it seem like the player is about to do some serious walking or climbing or something. Maybe reconsider it?

Final thoughts: I really do enjoy this style, and I wish i could take part in a game like this, as i love the AC/HM series to death, and i think you should stick to those genres. Theyre very unique and have room for what seems like limitless content. Maybe you can have a town system, but have some action elements in there? Like trading furniture or something with NPCs, but then defending the town from monsters or something? Whatever you do, have fun and DONT GIVE UP!

Just played the game and here's my feedback:

> I like the general feel of the game: the graphics are nice; the HUD is smooth and the engine seems to run nicely.
> I love Animal Crossing so this game has potential - keep it up!
> I like the 3/4 view - it suits the game.
> Depth perception was generally good, but please change the colour of the trees' leaves so they are slightly darker. They really do blend with the grass.
> I quite liked the music, to be honest. I think if it changed throughout the day like on Animal Crossing, that would be cool.

Overall, good job. Keep up the good work!

I've changed the tree colors so you can distinguish them from the ground more easily, but it's not in the current version. I'll be updating it after the GMC Jam #6 voting is over.

I am totally diggin this gameplay =D
Graphics are mostly awesome, gameplay is fun but it seems like there are some bugs with distance to the player? like sheering flowers.
You definitely need some sort of inventory other than a long hotbar. I assume crafting will be in this game? or at least way to obtain tools.

If you're going with a minecraft-esque kind of game, I'd suggest adding crafting, day/night cycle, and a couple enemies. like ghosts at night or just wild animals.
Overall it's a very nice work in progress. I am very interested in seeing how far this game goes. It slightly reminds me of minicraft, but with a lot more gameplay and way better graphics.

I mentioned that the graphics are "mostly" awesome, that has to do with the tree. The shading on the trunk kills it completely.
I'll redo the shading for you and you can use it if you want. Stay tuned for a pm.

Good luck!

Yeah, I still have to tweak some item use stuff. As for an actual inventory, I do plan on adding one, but I just have the hotbar for now, as it's not really needed yet.

As for crafting, I don't know if I want to add it or not. When I said Minecraft-esque, I only meant the exploration and survival aspects of it, not all of it. As for a day/night cycle, it already has one. I'll be adding more creatures to the game eventually (There are birds, fireflies, dragonflies, and butterflies currently), most of which will just be for aesthetics.

And yes, I saw your PM and replied with the new trees...

Posted Image

As you can see (Well, not so much, as the pine trees cover most of it), I've shaded the trees to still fit the graphical style, and made the pine trees look more round. I've also added the godrays from the title screen into the game itself, as well as making the godrays on the title screen progress before the title screen turns to night time.

Hah, thanks!

Like I said before, I'll be releasing a new demo once the Jam is over, as I don't want to sway voting with the new changes or anything, as it wouldn't be fair.

Hopefully by then, I'll have a proper inventory, along with the interior of the house. Right now I'm just working on aesthetics, like the godrays, along with some other weather effects.

As long as my vote helps to motivate you :)
And don't worry, my vote was based on your jam entry. Not on any new/upcoming version thereafter.

Looking forward to it!

Ahh, a nice Spring morning. :D

The sun comes up in the right side of the screen :D ?
So the east side is the right side of the screen ?
Don't know, kinda feels strange, might be just me tough.

Looks great btw, I really like the progress of it and the upcoming features.
Are you planning to add neighbour NPC's that do random stuff ?

I know, was just asking because I had another perspective in mind with the game.
Doesn't matter, it was still morning when I wrote that

Added a little pond, and gave both still and flowing water sun glare sparkle things. Not sure what the actual term is, but yet.

Also made it so the HUD disappears while standing still.
