I stumbled upon the Game Maker 8.0 resources folder when I installed Game Maker.
Things included in this are images and sounds such as:
"ball_basketball.png"
"ball_soccer.png"
"applause.wav"
"baby1.wav"
etc...
Am I allowed to use these resources, and sell my product with them?
Or are these resources considered copyright protected?
Legal question regarding Game Maker Resources

I'm pretty sure you are free to use them, however you may want to check with somebody who knows for sure first.
Also, selling your game will be very hard if you're using the default resources anyway, but that generally goes without saying.

Yes, you can use them in games you sell. The GameMaker 8.1 HELP file says:Am I allowed to use these resources, and sell my product with them?
GameMaker also installs a considerable number of images, sprites (animated images) and sound effects on your computer, which can be used free of charge in your games.
YoYo Games is granting you the right to use them in your games. Whether or not you sell your game (or make freeware) is irrelevant.
If YYG created them, then they own the copyright, and they are granting you the right to use them in your games. If someone else created them, then YYG must have acquired the rights to distribute them.Or are these resources considered copyright protected?
Either way, you can use them in your games without worry. The only common-sense limitation is that you can't sell the resources separately. (Similar to the restriction that Microsoft puts on many of its public-use fonts, for example.)
