I have a rough game in Game Maker 8.1, having a small splash screen, followed by larger rooms. When I import into Game Maker Studio, all the rooms are the same size as the small splash screen. If I make the splash screen artificially big (which looks silly), the rooms will be normal size.

Do all the rooms in Game Maker Studio have to be the same size? They all seem to take the size of the first room in the game (even if it is the splash screen).

Yes, the 1st room dictates the size/resolution of the game. Games shouldn't really change the window size (or screen resolution) all the time, it's a very bad user experience. On top of this, you simply can't do this on Android, iOS (or any other mobile/Console), so it's been standardised to make it more consistent across platform.

You will be able to change the window size yourself in game, but it won't happen automatically. (there's still a bug associated with this BTW)

I've played a few exe's in the WIP forums where the first room was one size, then when you hit play the size changes. I would find some of those and ask them how they did it. No doubt it requires quite a bit of code.

Thanks, that explains it. Of course this makes sense for phones and tablets. For PC games it is common to have a small splash screen. In fact many of the examples in "The Game Maker's Apprentice" work that way.
