LINK TO COMPETITION

On Tuesday the 1st of May 2012, at 0:00am GMT, you will have three months to make an RPG (see Rules for details).
You must then submit your RPG by Wednesday the 1st of August 2012, at 0:00am GMT, after which the winners will be decided.
This will be the grand finale of Competition Four Digits 2011/2012, a competition three times longer than any other in the year!

RULES:
1. The aim of the competition is to develop entirely your own game within the time limit (1st May - 1st August). You MUST submit your final game before the 1st of August 2012. You will have to keep up to date with my blog posts to find out how to submit your final game.
2. You MUST have stated you are going to enter before the 1st of May 2012.
3. You MUST NOT include anything in the game that you don't have full permission to use or significant amounts of game content that you had already made prior to the competition.
4. Your final game MUST have "RPG elements", specifically relating to the gameplay (eg anything such as experience points, inventories, quests, turn-based combat, etc. Fantasy themes and long storylines are common in RPGs, but not related to the gameplay).
5. There are no programming language/game engine restrictions except that the game MUST run on Windows 7. Your game shouldn't require additional software installation (unless you really need to do so).
6. Don't be a cheater.
7. ONE entry per person, maximum team of FOUR.
8. I reserve the right to update or otherwise change the rules and to disqualify any entrant who breaks the rules.

Special GMC Message:
Hello Game Maker Community! Nocturne has kindly given me permission to post a topic in the community forum, not just the competition topic due the the fact that YoYo Games are sponsoring this event. I hope this will allow me to respond to any questions you have much better.

This competition is 3 months long, a massive undertaking, but necessary for the theme (RPGs). We haven't hosted one this long, so it's a bit of an experiment. The objective of the competition is your own gain and nobody elses - you end up with a game and hopefully some prizes (subject to further donations). What's more this is an inter-community competition which will be advertised at as many places possible, so your getting the opportunity to meet new people with diverse skillsets and also compete with a whole new level of opposition.

I hope you take the time to check it out!

Darn. The prizes look amazing, but RPGs just aren't my kind of project. They're basically my least favorite genre (both to play and to make). Oh, well.

Good luck to the people who do enter, though! :D

Hello Game Maker Community! Nocturne has kindly given me permission to post a topic in the community forum, not just the competition topic. I hope this will allow me to respond to any questions you have much better.

I'm looking forward to this contest a lot. It's my entire plan for what to do in the Summer! But, heh, the variance in the prizes is noticeably clashing. That's not a criticism though. It's just interesting to point out.

Admittedly, the rules are kind of... not filled out? I mean, many questions have been answered in the appropriate 64digits blog entry / thread, so you'd think the rules could be amended to include them somehow. That's minor though, don't worry about it.

I would, in particular, like if something was clarified. In the 64digits thread, you talk about what the max member number means, in detail. It's not said here though, and you also haven't stated if the people who want to join *have to* register on 64digits in order to be added to the entrants list.

The banner could stand to be a bit brighter, since the default skin here is somewhat dark...

Anyway, don't mind me, I'm just rambling. I'm excited to participate in this competition, and it only has one week before it starts! What a fun time.

5. There are no programming language/game engine restrictions except that the game MUST run on Windows 7 and MUST NOT require additional software installation.

I don't quite understand 'additional software installation' can you please elaborate?

All that software installation really is, is copying files. Does this mean I can't install a vcredist or copy files not to do with the game but are to do with the engine across or what?

I mean technically I could include whole software into my exe and 'install' it that way, but is that against the rules or?

Also are we able to start the design doc before-hand or do you want pre-production included into the time.

When they say additional software installation they mean that you can't make a game that requires the installation of other program's to run your game :)

Oh damn, that rule's been updated. You can now use additional software.

@Debels was it really necessary to quote the entire post? Now this page is confusing

@thatselby Try actually reading my post.

@FamousJellyfish Unfortunately there alot of different posts of this competition on different forums and I'm only one person. I update as often as I can but I can't spend time finetuning I'm afraid.

I've just signed up! It's gonna be fun to actually have a goal to achieve with my current 2 RPG engines... perhaps that might make me pull together and actually finish them!

Sorry, removed the quote :)

Your going to have huge advantage with your RPG engines D:, but it would make the competition really interesting ^_^, but please don't post those engines before the comp end's since we could find a lot of people using your engine just adding places (town's) and changing the graphics and that would make a lot of game's that where just copy/pasted from an engine :P.

Hope you get my point Yal :D, Thanks for entering now i know there's one person that would make wining harder (since i don't really know all of the other 130 participant's i don't know there developing skill's xD)

I'll enter, but I'm currently planning on learning two languages (C# with XNA and Java), and I'm currently making an adventure game that will stretch into the summer. Don't expect anything big from me.

I've never made an RPG before. Sounds like fun. I'll do my best to not have my game suffer from issues most RPGs have, such as arduous grinding and boring level design.
