Just as the title says...is it still applicable to getting a good grasp on the software. I really enjoy working through structured courses and though picking up a book would help speed things up. Anyone's thoughts on this is welcomed.

There's...a book? Well. I taught myself GM through trial an error..but I bet a book would have made my coding more...conventional. Haha

Be warned some of the examples and tutorials no longer function correctly (as stated in the book) as they use features that are either buggy or no longer function the same way..

But it will teach you the basics of coding in GML (best to learn with GM8.1 which is compatible with the book) then transfer your knowledge to GameMaker:studio.

Thanks! I own GM8.1 Pro so I will snag the book here soon. Is there anywhere to download the tutorials for the kindle version? I would rather buy it like that if I can get the tutorials that go along with it online as well.

You will need to contact the publisher about downloading the tutorials...

My thoughts exactly, though I had my twin brother (who was always a step ahead of me in terms of GM knowledge) to aid me at times.

There are a bunch of nice tutorials online and the help contents GM has is brilliant. :)

Also, do a lot of prototyping; it'll do you good.

I use stuff that I learned from Game Maker's Companion in my HTML5 games. I doubt the examples will port perfectly, but once you learn the principles they should be able to be brought across.
