What are the possibilities of running studio games on a kindle fire?
Is it not just an android device with some modifications?

Amazon made some pretty drastic changes to the kernel for the Kindle Fire version of Android, so although it IS android it is so heavily customized that many native apps have issued on it. If you will notice most popular apps are a Kindle Fire Edition.

I might be wrong and correct me if I am but I think the reason some android apps don't work on the kindle fire is because they used API 10 to create it. Android is now at API 15 so if its not backwards compatible the app will not work.

API 10 is Gingerbread - and a good portion of cell phones on the market are still running on it (and a good chunk are on froyo as well). Almost (not all) all apps are compatible with Gingerbread because a lot of Android devices still use it.

What make the Kindle Fire incompatible are the changes Amazon made to Android to customize it for their device. Eclair is when support gets sketchy.

Another problem stems from the fact that some android apps call for hardware that the Kindle Fire does not even have.

We have one here, and it is running on it. However I think there are some setup issues to be addressed.

We have a Kindle Fire and it is all working fine... you need to follow the Amazon setup to get ADB working properly http://g-ecx.images-...Fire_to_ADB.pdf

But once that is all done it works just as any other Android tablet.

We have a few ICS machines here - it works fine if you are using ADB and connect with it wired, but there is a bug on the Wifi download for ICS that I have yet to look at which causes the runner to die if you try to change settings.

Not sure about Kindle fire with ICS though... never tried that.

I am using a Samsung Vibrant T959 and an Acer a100 with ICS and both of them are working great, including downloading over WiFi. Good to hear it is working on the Fire, I am going to buy one today so I have one to test on as well.

It does'nt make sense if you flash the kindle with an ics rom, testing games in Kindle should have in mind to release it in the Amazon appstore. Unless you just wanted to test your game on a larger screen size.

I just started to play with the Kindle fire and it works fine, just follow the setup provided by rwkay above this post. I am using windows 7.
One thing I found on the Yoyo runner was, I cannot load the game on usb, but it runs fine using wifi loading (maybe my Kindle has problems). So setup your kindle to wifi if usb laoding doesn't work. I also noticed a lag on my wav and music playing on the kindle (about half a second), even my native android apps in the market has the same issues in audio playback in my Kindle.

Load your Yoyo runner through usb one time then use wifi to load your compiled games after you setup and run yoyo runner in your device.

Whew glad I didnt buy that one. I bought the simple and inexpensive Legacy 7" tablet to test my apps on. I didnt want another huge or expensive just to test.

It takes a little while but you can get Kindle fire working :)! It's quite a nice platform to be honest as the screen is a nice size :P!

So once we get our apps working on kindle then what? Does that mean that the APK file will run on Kindle? Can we submit it to the Amazon App Store? Are we going to need to wait until GM comes up with a Kindle friendly APK?

Just wanted to add my two cents in to this topic. I was really looking forward to making games for the Kindle Fire, since it's a great Android device with consistent hardware, a wide audience, and a stable marketplace through Amazon.

I tried everything in this thread, and my game now boots up on the Kindle Fire, but it immediately closes down when I move to the next room after my intro room. The destination room is a physics world. If I go to any non-physics room, the game works fine. The crash therefore relates to the physics engine.

EDIT: Just an update. I built another game which compiled just fine, but when I loaded it onto the Kindle Fire, it would load the Game Maker splash screen and then crash.

Please submit a bug report with as much detail as you can (device, os version, etc) . Also if you're able to, attach the projects (export > gmz) you used which had issues. You can make the bug report private if you don't want the projects to be public (ie, its a game you plan to release/sell etc).

Also test the game under windows to see if that works - you should be able to find the issue easier and faster with the windows runner.

Will do; thanks! The game works fine in Windows, so I think it's a problem isolated to either Kindle Fire or Android. I'll get that bug report submitted.

Also, I discovered the problem with my second game was in an encryption script. I turned that off and the game ran fine. So the other problem seems to be tied to the physics engine.
