In my 3d fps game i have a object which stays at the obj player and keeps the same angle.
It is called obj_useline and detects if there is a object you can pick up on it.
The problem is that it doesn't work with Z directions, l can waaaaaaaaay above the object and still pick it up?

Any ideas?

You'll have to track the z heights of objects and compare them to this "useline" object's z. Personally, there are much better ways than using an object to compare, but meh.
