Please dont double post, theres an edit button.

With GM:HTML5, Iphone's/Androids need to go to your site on the internet. You cant make apps. Thats where GM:S comes in. But its in beta, and cant be distributed yet. :(.

But yes, Iph/And can play your game online, as long as you have support on your end

Well someone posted a guide of how to make a application for android with GM:HTML5 (of course that would access your website for the data required) for IOS only on websites :)
You can use GM:Studios that has an initial prize of 99$ for Windows and Mac Export, then you can buy IOS for 200$ and Android for other 200$, of course with out counting the IOS/Android developer License

While there are a heck of a lot of MMORPGs being developed in Game Maker there are very, very few completed MMORPGs made in Game Maker.

While GM is great for certain projects and starting to mature if you're really serious about making your own MMORPG you might want to check out that sneaky Google site for open source MMORPGs or dedicated MMORPG makers. There is Eclipse, a complete 2D MMORPG engine that is fairly popular and there's a number of others for 3D MMOs such as Realm Crafter and many similar engines.

If your heart is set on making a MMORPG in Game Maker then for the love of god start small. If you succumb to what I like to call "featuritis" i.e. announcing that your game will have mind blowing graphics, recreate the genre and have a million totally new features then you mine as well stop yourself now.

Also, consider your audience. How many people do you think will realistically play your game and for how long? How will you pay for dedicated servers to host the game? Do you think you can get people to actually pony up cash to play your game versus the vast amount of games already available? How long will you be able to maintain the game and work on new stuff?

If after considering those factors it seems like on second thought it might not be feasible then you may want to consider instead making a single player rpg, or a game with limited social/online functions.

Also, consider that the proverbial "noob" whose first game is going to be a mmorpg and who optionally is also wanting to recruit some team members to make a gajillion original graphics, soundtracks, help with programming, mmm...do the programming?, etc. with no pay but the promise of being an admin and you've totally already made a website on Webs.com is sort of a big running joke in the game development community at large.

Starting with small, simple projects is a way to break into a new programming language or platform with an immediate goal and result, which then gives you a more realistic idea of what sort of projects you might be up to in the future.

You just broke a GMC rule by naming other Game Developing Platform :/

Those aren't really platforms. They're engines, open source ones in fact. And I'm not "promoting" them. I'm just stating the obvious that while Game Maker works for a number of different things there are other things that are more tuned to specific niche genres and also that my first project is going to be a MMORPG maybe isn't the best first project.

But if they're honestly that strict about it and interpret what is obviously sound advice as direct promotion then I retract my previous statement and would instead say that
Game Maker is the perfect software for making every type of game possible ever.

Well, I'm new-ish to these forums and I don't know exactly how they interpret their rules.

Well, all the Official Rules state is "Please do not promote any product that directly or indirectly competes with any product by YoYo Games Ltd.".

I'm not promoting any products. I'm not saying go out and buy this! Heck, that engine I mentioned is free and open source in fact. If we're not allowed to discuss any programming environment, language, compiler, third party product or even project outside of GM including many of these that can be integrated with GM, somebody clue me in so I don't make this mistake again please.

Just for example on an online game I play, you're not allowed to "promote" other similar games in the manner of "Hey! This game sucks! Play Game B instead!" but you're entirely allowed to have lengthy forum discussions about Game B as long as its on the proper board of course or in proper context to the current discussion.

Woah, hold on.

You CAN indeed make online, multiplayer games with Game Maker.

That said, anytime someone says, "I want to make a mmorpg" regardless of the platform they most often forget to factor in things like:

Cost to create game
Cost to create content
(because let's face it's every artist's dream to create vast amounts of content for a game that won't even end up half-finished for free right? Well, no actually.)
Cost to create *quality* content (optional?)
Server Upkeep cost, Server scalability
Game maintenance, admin, moderation
Game updates/patches/fixes
Life of game, how long do you intend to host servers & perform at least bare game maintenance?

This is assuming you won't be able to do this all by yourself, you want help from other people, you won't be able to pay them and you'll be relying on players donating/purchasing game content to pay for the server or optionally you want someone to host the server themselves, also for free.

At least half the time, someone's desire to create their own mmorpg is driven solely by the hatred of admins on another game and wanting to be their own admin, which if given the chance they would likely be as bad as they perceived the other admins to be.

I'm not saying that refers to this case but I've been on too many forums where over half the time, usually much higher this was the case almost word for word.

Are there any examples that actually work in Game Maker HTML5 for running a server, and clients able to connect properly, and then show how to move data about? Like have one simple object one player can move around the screen, and it updates the information to the server, so all the clients then see the current location?

How to access information on the server such as "check location, is there a solid object there" etc. before allowing a character to move?

Also how to send a signal to run code/functions on the server? If you have everything working on single player, then the client should just be sending information to run the same code on the server, and getting information back again. Example: player wishes to buy something at a shop. It sends a signal to try that. The server checks the person's amount of money and the cost of the object, and determines if they have enough, then deducts the amount if they do, and puts the item in their inventory. Signal sent to them to list their new updated inventory.

Any examples on how to do this which will compile with the current version of GM:HTML5? Or are there too many broken functions in it right now for anything to work?
