Howdy folks, a month or so back I asked Mike whether GMS will have file_text_read, etc etc. He confirmed this. And then the GM Designing Successful Phone Games confirms that the functions are in Android/iOS. Now the document is quite old so this may no longer be the case. It also stated that .ini files must be used for save files. Again, this may no longer be the case.

Now sadly I can't chase this query down as I'm at uni and my iPhone is at home and based on the fact I return home for the easter period in a few weeks, it seems stupid just to go home to test it. And as for Android, I don't have an Android phone (YET...)

So I must ask GMC to confirm my wonderings on the following thing.

  • Does loading .txt files work on Android/iOS? (Double choc chip cookies to anyone who checks the saving .txt files)
  • Can you save and load .ini on Android/iOS?

Cookies go out to those who help. Hopefully you guys will and I'm sure they'll be people here wanting to know as well. In the mean time, I'm going on continue testing the C++ and HTML runners.

The first question I don't know, but I have read you can not.
The seconds is YES, you can use INI files. I'm using them for saving/loading and unblocking lvls, etc.

Good to know for the second question. Have you got it working on a Android phone?

Yes, on Motorola Defy. And you can download a file manager, get into the Gm Studio folder and delete the ini file to reset everything :).

Well that's good to hear! I'll be enquiring about ini files soon.

Does anyone know anything about the .txt files?

I have read that don't work anymore... but ini files for me is the same, you can save all the variables you want in an organized way, both numerics and alphabetic.
If you have any doubt of how to use it, look at this:

A bump from me as I would appreciate an official word on this too, I'm not able to test yet but would like to know in advance if I am building my save file structure correctly based on whether file_text_read etc will work...

Exe_mas, got a link to where you read they dont work? Was it an official statement?

There was a similar thread a few days ago. I tested both ini files and writing/reading to a txt file and it worked just fine. In my test, I wrote to a txt file and then read the file back. The file remained on the device long after exiting the application (and still does a week later). So it should work just fine.

I have been saving highscores in an ini file, but realise that through a file manager, it is going to be easy to adjust the scores. Having said that, I can't actually find the GM Studio runner folder in file manager, do you know the path to get to it?

Edit: Spelling.
