We are delighted to have picked up a Pocket Gamer Award for Karoshi!

Huge congratulations to Jesse Venbrux the creator of one of the most popular games on PC, iPhone and Android! Karoshi has been played by millions to date to high acclaim.

Mr Karoshi is an overworked Japanese salaryman who’s had enough and his only goal is to end it all. You control him to work through the fast logic puzzles trying to find hilarious ways to his demise in this highly original, puzzle, platformer with a twist.

Here are Russell and Mike picking up the award in San Francisco whilst attending GDC. The full list of of the Pocket Gamers Awards can be found here. The competition was pretty tough so we're quite chuffed as you can see :)

Wow, I knew it was popular, but not to that degree! :o
Congratz to YoYo, but particularly Mr. Venbrux himself! Let him have a taste of the champagne too :3

Great to see it getting this kind of recognition - even a year after release! Wouldn't have been possible with all the help from YoYo Games :D

Something I've wondered. Why hasn't Frozzd been put onto the store? It's gameplay isn't complex and it would be able to work on mobile phones. Plus it's a hell of alot of fun

I will be buying Karoshi the moment I get an Android. Gotta support the GM games

I'd say due to it's high similarity to copyrighted material, perhaps.

@TV What, like that's a problem on the app store? (also, what game's it very similar too?)

It's on the mac app store, anyway.

Well that is all that comes to mind on why it might not be ported (it still might, who knows). The core mechanic is identical to Super Mario Galaxy - though that's just what I heard, I haven't played it...and you're right, it probably isn't an issue.

I would doubt (although stranger things have happened) that Nintendo would be able to trademark platformers that involve navigating between different sources of gravity. It's just too open.

Congratulations (again... said this on Facebook already), to Jesse and YoYo Games. :)

About Frozzd

I just haven't really taken the time to rework the game for mobile but it's definitely an option for the future!

I would doubt (although stranger things have happened) that Nintendo would be able to trademark platformers that involve navigating between different sources of gravity. It's just too open.

For one thing, Mega Man 5 had GravityMan; all elements present in the 2D sections of SMG are present in that stage.

Oh, and the point is, MM5 was released more than 10 years before SMG.

As for the planet thing, I personally think that it's secondary in SMG (as opposed to Frozzd which relies on it a lot) while the Mario aestethics are the main selling point. The game relies a lot on 2D and 3D gameplay similar to older games in the franchise (aka, one "down" direction for the gravity) and mainly uses the planets as an excuse to link levels together, with the occasional gimmick planets.

So, put short, Frozzd should be safe. They Need To Be Fed used a similar mechanic, have been released around a year ago, and as far as I know, not being sued to pieces by our japanese friends.
