You should start on something less detailed, this looks, really bad

I included the original image, and then what I noticed.

Don't pillow shade, pick a dominant light source , change facial expressions (mainly mouth, and please lower the brightness of eyes), colors for skin and natural, clothing colors are wrong also, (don't use neon, bright colors unless it's something like fire). Your shadows sometimes don't appear to have light sources to start with and were just added as pillow shading. I would make a sprite of the zombie, with no blood at all, currently you have too much and it's covering some detail.
Get the basics down, then do the accessories like blood. For doing blood, lower the opacity on the brush and add highlights to it to add depth and a shiny, reflective look. Your shoulders and anatomy are off too. I would recommend Andrew Loomis, but I would only do that if your serious about drawing traditional too. To fix the anatomy I would take a step back and evaluate what the sprite would look like as a real person. For yours, the head is too big, shoulders aren't square, (they are lopsided), and your hand's are a little bit too big. Also, some parts of this look fuzzy on the inside and jagged on the outside.

Sometimes it's easier to start with a big version and then go down to a small, but detailed version. All depends on the artist.

Please take into consideration Color Values, Saturation, and Contrast.

Start with something simple, even a cube is good. Then go onto shading, identifying a light source, and shadows, highlights, reflections, ect.

And Kygon, be nice... :)

Lol, I know.

But in all seriousness it probably help to start on something more geometric, (A cube or something as Jster said) and work your way up.

You should work on your anatomy.
Get a feeling for shapes and proportions and your shading will automatically improve because you have an idea of the form you're trying to shade.
Also grass is not always green and the sky is not always blue. They rarely ever are. Brightness is much more important to describe shapes than hue.

Good stuff, 9_6, great pointers, I really couldn't figure out how to do that sprite the right way.

I hate how people always draw the grass green, it's like drawing the sun in the corner of the paper.

Can you send me the link to your pixeljoint?
