This example shows you how to force users to install your HTML5 game to their iPod or iPhone homepage. There are several benefits of doing this, for both you and your players:

  • You get back about 100 pixels that the Safari mobile browser takes away from you, because homepage apps run in fullscreen mode
  • Since the app runs in fullscreen, you can create a single interface for both your HTML5 app and your iOS app (when GM Studio comes out)
  • By installing the game on the homepage, players can access your game faster in the future which encourages repeat plays

Sweet stuff. I was trying to work with a method involving little pop-up balloons but it messed with the canvas :/

Will try this on future web-apps!

Made a template for myself. thought i'd share it if anyone wants it to look iOS-y:

Nice! I might even use this :) Can you provide a version with layers/transparency?

Sure.

PNG w/ Alpha: Here
Fireworks Editable PNG w/ Layers: Here
PSD w/ Layers: Here (As this was made in Fireworks, there are minor differences in the PSD version. Easy to edit though).

how do you actually add the app to the homescreen? im a little confused because all this seems to do is add a promt that says whether the app is installed. it doesnt actually install the app.

No problem. The example is a bit old by now but it still might help.
