Greetings,
I have a question about how to achieve an effect. I've seen this done before thought that it was neat effect, and would save some resources (well, I wouldn't have to have as many wall sprites that face different directions), but I'm not exactly sure how to do this. I've seen some guides but they're not for the Game Maker version I have, so I'm not sure how I'd "convert" those codes to something I can use.
Anyway, what I'm talking about is creating 3D walls for a 2D top-down shooter game. All of the other sprites, from the player character, enemies, objects, and so forth, are "flat" 2D sprites which I already have all drawn up and ready to go, but I would like to make the walls 3D, or at least look 3D, to have some perspective and depth (and to, like I said, save me a little bit of effort when it comes to placing the walls in the editor).
I've seen NJP's Top Down Fake 3D guide, and while that's basically the effect I'm looking for-- though I'd be using these for walls, as I mentioned, and not buildings-- his guide is written for Game Maker 8. I have Game Maker 7 so, while interesting, the guide doesn't help me very much because of the differences in the coding between the two GM versions, and I'm not sure how to "convert" GM8 codes to GM7 codes. I can't even open the guide to see it in GM7.
I have done some searching around the forum but I haven't found much for GM7. The only one I found for GM7 gave me some very... strange results when I tried to implement it into the game I've been working on, but I didn't completely understand the codes, either.
I don't need anything fancy, and the simpler the better. The walls can be 3D or the "fake 3D" similar to NJP's example, whatever is easiest. How would I code something like this?
Any help or advice would be much appreciate.
Thank you for your time.
