SideQuest- The innovative gravity-changing platformer.
File>Download

SideQuest is a platformer where you change the gravity to reach the end.
So far I've done:
1. 4 and a bit levels (including a dark cave one)
2. A menu screen
3. Movement and gravity coding.
4. Health, lives and score.
5. Jungle tiles.
6. Basic Enemy
7. Character spriting (except mid jump)

Still to be done:
1. More levels/world
2. Story
3. Main character sprites (I've got someone working on that)
4. More menu options.
5. Level select room.
6. Game over message instead of returning to start.
7. Enemies
8. General improvements and bug fixes.

Controls: Arrow keys to move. Z to jump. X to shift gravity.

Looking for feedback and bug reports about what I've already done. (In particular lag as my friends have been having lots of it)

Also needing story ideas. I was thinking something like, you crash land on a life fulfilled planet - only to find an evil company polluting the atmosphere in attempts to make biological weapons.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing you already know this but the buttons for your menu don't work except for the play button.

Other than that It's pretty interesting. For the plot I suggest something along the lines of this:

You had always dreamed of being an interplanetary explorer but sadly you're too young. Your parents want you to marry some girl who you don't even like. All your friends hate your guts now. YOU WANT FREEDOM! So you right before the "big night" with your GF you steal your parents HSS-Spaddle Paddle and launch off (sort of like SpaceBalls). However, you forgot to fill up before you left and you quickly run out of fuel. You manage to aim your ship towards a hospitable looking planet and crash there.

The next day you wake up. Your parents crappy ship is totaled. All communications are down. And you barely have enough food to survive for a couple weeks. However, you did manage to salvage a weird looking device. After strapping it on and pressing some buttons it boots up and you realize it has the power to change the gravity surrounding your body (Tutorial).

You start exploring for any life forms on the planet while learning the terrain (more tutorial). After the second day (or so) you oversee a robot/thing extracting raw (power) crystals. You follow it back to it's base and after hesitating you sneak inside. While inside you see the blueprints for a BioChecmical weapon that has the capability to destroy every type of organism on any known planet. The CEO of the company leads back to your home planet. Intrigued you devise a plan to take down the boss of this evil, polluting mining facility.

Along the way you meet a robot you reprogram/ stranded person like you/ outcast/ A.I./ intelligent animal/ creature. They become your companion and help you throughout the story. You fight multiple mini-bosses during your time on this planet all in different places. (1-2 outside of the mining factory- like natives - and 3-5 inside the factory - which would be robots, melting factory robot, bio-chem robots, and a Captain/ Supervisor of the factory.

You finally defeat the boss of the factory who presses a self-destruct button as s/he/it dies. You grab the latest and greatest space ship and fly to your home planet to stop this dastardly fiend. When you arrive you find out that your home town has been taken over by some evil robot and the biochemical weapons have started to work. Everyone is dieing or captured by a self-proclaimed "King" who's been enslaving people to test his/her latest weapons on before he/her takes over other planets.

You fight your way into the "castle" and find yourself next to the "King". The character reveals himself, and you find out it's your evil long forgotten uncle or your step-dad. He then gives you a choice. You can either save the love of your life which is revealed to be one of your close friends or you can save your kingdom.

You're like, "BS, I'm gonna be Mario". So you strap on your Grav-Lift, save your GF and then follow the evil "king" as he escapes to his lair. Along the way various machines and weapons are fired at you but you survive them all to reach the "King" who you then defeat. Happily ever after blah blah.

NOTE: S/He might could also reveal their identity moments before they die, whatever you want to build suspense.

And there's my 15 minutes of crazy, thinking. This should really have gone in the game idea and design section.

(: (Hope it made sense) :)

Wow, what an amazing idea. I'll certainly use that unless someone else has any better ideas. (Highly unlikely though ). Thanks a lot, you'll go in the credits.
Yh i did know that the menu options don't work. I just wanted to make it look nice for now.
Did the game lag at all for you?

Since my first comment, i've added a few more levels and some enemies. - Bees that fly towards you if you get too close.
Will update the link by tomorrow evening.

I really like this game idea man. Can't wait to play later versions.
Really nice and simple gameplay element!
I understand it's a wip but I'd love to see it with sound and spritework! :'D

I'm glad you like it. No ones commented on lag so far so i'm assuming it's fine?

I'm currently also trying to find out how to perform underwater breathing for this game if any1 can help?

I made an example on bars, not sure if this might help:
Example on DropBox
Underwater air is just like health.

Have a water object tile.
for the player::
step: if place_meeting (x,y,water_object) air -= 1
might be a little more complex than that though...

Thanks for the example although I can't access it (i do have a drop box account)
I've been experiencing some problems although the principal seems quite easy. If you've got a suggestion then head over to the link in my sig.

The only lag I encounter is when I change gravity from the ground or ceiling, (which you could mask with an animation). I also noticed that the collision with the walls sometimes makes you frozen in place. And if you die and press X occasionally you will be stuck in the upside down position even when your going down.

Also, I have an idea:
ITEMS! You have to use the coins for something right? Perhaps a grapple, jump boost, double jump, laser gun, robot scout? Also, I got to level 3, the one with all the water, and for some reason it appears to be impossible to reach the other side. Is it?

I actually didn't get any lag, probably because I'm on an i7.

A shopstall would be freaking amazing.

A couple of things:

-Bars show on home screen. Hide em'!
-Make jump button more obvious (i.e. up button or space)
-Different background. See one I made quickly here http://i.imgur.com/DchxK.png

-(Low Priority) Consider not using built-in room transitions, use surfaces, they're a lot smoother. PM if you want help with this.

Other than that, look pretty nice. Good graphics style and gameplay.

Thank you all for your time.

Jster - I'll get working on all those bugs you mentioned. The third level is possible, it's as much puzzle as action. Try going from different directions and using your jump with gravity change to maximize flight. If you think that level has lots of water - then try level 4!
I do like your idea for a shop, I'll use that but perhaps not until later in game. The coins currently provide lives if you reach 100 but they could also serve as currency

JWRAC - Wow! i7 - thats amazing!

Conner - Thanks for your input. I'll hide the menu screen bars and might change the jump button to space or sumin (z could become shoot if you acquire a gun later on) I already have someone who will make me backgrounds however I do like your example and will probably implement it at some point.
I'll pm you at some point over room transitions although its not my greatest priority.

I got past the third level. And I also got to the fourth level with the bees and water. Then I quit lol. I'm still having wall troubles and I also noticed that occasionally, if you jump off the edge and switch the gravity at the same time, but die, your sprite image is frozen in the upside down one. I have a question too, Will there be a swimming sprite in the future or does the sprite not change.

That bug is known to me, I'm working on fixing it.
I probably will add a swimming sprite unless i completely fail at the swimming physics.
