Hello.

I am in the process of making a 3d fps called Error 43.
At the moment it is very good (imo) but i realy need to start making some enemies. There are going to be human enemies at first and then later in the game, either zombies and deamons or robots will be the new enemies. I dont know whether to go with a story line along the lines of half life 2 (aliens) or something like terminator where the robots turn (robots) so im asking what type of enemies does everyone like to play against and new ideas will be appreciated.

My other question would be how the enemies are constructed, either 3d models or 2d sprites facing the player. I could quite easily make robot 3d model enemies but not alien enemies as the animations would be very hard to do in gm. Also i am not very good at making sprite animations so if anyone knows where to find some good doom style sprites then please share.

So the 2 questions are: robot or alien enemies and 2d or 3d enemies.

if anyone has any other ideas feel free to shere.

Thanks.

If you can't make your own alien ones and you could "quite easily make robot 3d model enemies" it sounds like you have your answer.

3D enemies FTW. Of course, as a modeller I am biased, but yeah. However, there are pros and cons to both:

3D Pros:
-More realistic
-Easier to animate
-Expandable; skins, textures, and bump maps can be switched to provide entirely different looking characters out of the same model. An example, showing how you could easily switch sets of armor without needing a different model:

Cons:
-Time consuming to make
-Depending on your render system, may be too much in terms of performance. If you are using an engine like GMOgre, I wouldn't worry about it.

2D Pros:
-Better performance
-More people can make them, and they're faster to make

Thanks for the reply.

I have decided to go with the robot enemies (for easy modeling). I am not using any engines other than gm 8.0 so normal and bump mapping is out of the picture.

I plan to be making a few different types of robots for this game and have some ideas so far but it would be good if some people could be willing to share some ideas on designs for them as it is always good to see othe peoples ideas for things.

Thanks. Adam.

Hi whiteshadow,

People, aliens and robots is a good start. Who doesn't enjoy both those?
How about tentacle beasts that pop out of the ground?
Ghosts...
Plant life...

But a story needs to be followed. That there was just what I'd enjoy killing.
A very basic FPS engine might need some wacky ideas to keep it going/fresh.
