Whenever a sound plays in Game Maker (Using the sound_play(sound) code) the game freezes for about half a second. How can I fix this?

Not really, there are only 3 sounds and there are a few sprites and objects. But it shouldn't be too bad.

Don't use Game Maker's sound system then, use something more reliable like FMOD:

Also, the size and preload settings of sounds matter. Do not play 2435 MB rawDCPM sounds for instance, better compress them to 8-bit 56bpm MPEG-III formatted WAV files. That's what I always do, giving my games that retro sound you'd typically want in 2D anyway.

Converting a normal WAV to a MP3-WAV using Windows XP's Sound Recorder gives you a filesize reduced with around 75%, so I'd advise you to at least try it and see if you like it.
