I've had a look around the forums and I didn't really see that many posts talking about GM Studio. As it's got an anticipated release of Q1 2012, is no one else other than me getting really excited about this? The idea that I will be able to code a game and then compile/export it to iOS and Android is awesome and I can't wait to have a go with it.

I know we have no idea how much a license is going to be or the exact release date, but to think that it could be really soon is motivating me to come with some game ideas.

I sure I'm not the only one that's getting excited about this, so who else is and what do you have planned to do with GM Studio when YoYo release it?

I don't really see what the hype is to be honest... I guess that's because I don't own an iPhone and play most games on my computer anyway...

I think there are a lot of kids who think they can make an iPhone game and make lots of money, who don't realize the costs and terms of using the App Store, or how competitive it is.

Lately, I've only been using GM for rapid testing of C++ code when I desire a graphical interface. This leads me to believe that GM Studio will not be worth worth the anticipated price.

HTML5 kinda stole the show from studio. For me at least.

So they learn, like we all do. :pinch:

I am excited for the things I'll be able to release myself, but not excited for the problems that may be caused by the wrong people using it.

I can see it all now, tons of Android and Mac games made in GM by people who don't have those devices being uploaded and breaking instantly causing utter havoc.

I guess that's because I don't own an iPhone and play most games on my computer anyway...

probably, but there is currently a much better market in smartphones than there is on PC.

A man after my own heart... I feel totally bypassed by the whole Android / iPhone market and their goings on...

Im excited about the software and like GameDevDan, I have concerns about beginners trying to be high and mighty. It took me and my team years of practice to be in a place where we can produce high quality games. (If anyone's wondering what we're developing http://gmc.yoyogames...howtopic=530004)

Aside from the the concerns and developer concerns, me and my team are looking forward to it!

Yeah I hear ya.
Also, frankly, most iPhone/Android games are crap "dip into for 5 minutes" type things... the non-buttonness makes it feel wrong to play things like platformers too. It's a verrry different market with verry different game types I think (compared to PC or console).

I only recently turned to the darkside (got an iPhone thing) almost entirely cos I wanna be able to test out my own games designed for iPhone & see if I can grab a piece of the pie... cos that's one big tasty pie right there! ::lmao::

At the end of the day the attraction of Studio is that it allows small indie teams or one man bands to speedily & easily port to iOS & Android, where they have a chance to make some serious $$$ *shrugs*.

I would say tho that to be successful, games kinda hafta be created from the ground up specifically for (& testing/playing through on) the actual devices. Cos things feel & look a *whole* lot different on those tiny screens with big fingers in the way...

Anywayyy... excited? You betchya!
Spud Zombiiiiiieeeeees!!! :ninja:

Really? Every game YoYo has released has been written with GameMaker (effectively very early versions of GM:Studio), and not only has it helped to fund our growth, but it helped to get us placed No.40 for the develop top 100 development studios (LINK), get games featured on a regular basis, and now has YoYo up for a Best Publisher award (LINK)!

We've never said you'll be writing the next Unreal, but I think we've proven over and over again what IS possible, and if your dedicated and smart, just how well you can do from it.

Having used Studio properly to make a game (not the early ones for most of YoYo's previous games), I have to say I love it! Being able to see, and develop your game on the device is amazingly cool.

...............although I would say that. All I'll say, is just wait. We have some really exciting news that'll have you all drooling! :turned:

EDIT: Oh, and as a cool little "aside".... GameMaker:Studio will have Box2D Physics across the board - and that's not even the exciting news!

I LOVE it. You already know how some wannabe indie developers don't understand that the best market for us is the casual/mobile market. Yes, some can do some hard core games, but they take much longer to develop and so though you can charge more for them, you usually get a better return on a couple casual games than on 1 hardcore game, at least as an indie developer.

So how long do we have to wait for the "GOOD" news, considering the Box2D bit is already great as it is????

I'm not drooling! I'm...I'm...KABOOM!
Anyway some people don't have "selling" in their minds. It would be greate having you own loving games portable! I'm not saying that we might not share the game. The only concern i have is about the terms you have to buy. Srry for my nooby question. Will you get in trouble (like jail or something like that) when you publish your FREE game? I mean, lets say you want to share your game and you publish it in somewhere(im too noob for those stuff honestly) or you share it via "Bluetooth" and your friend does the same without you knowing. Its just a nooby question don't answer if you don't want to :)

*pulls out a lightsaber*

Haha well Im more thinking of the beginners who aren't willing to get feedback to improve their games.

Can we have a small hint to this drooling news Mike? Or are YYG going to be mean and not give us a hint?

I don't think you'll get in trouble for publishing free games. After all, you're not charging anything. And from what I've read on the Android Developers T & C, you just got to basically follow the W.I.P / Creation rules regarding what stuff is allowed. I do think that no doubt YYG will provide us information on publishing games in the future. We just have to be patient (ironic coming from me lmao)

I am extremely excited.

Not sure how long ago, during the days of GM7 and before GM4Mac I started exploring other game creation tools, I simply wasn't happy with GameMaker and its Windows only output. Upon release of GM4Mac, I put my alternative game creation search on hold, but soon became disenchanted with GM again as I wanted to explore iOS development.

As soon as YYGs started exploring the c++ runner and iOS publishing themselves, I decided that I would be sticking with GameMaker. It has been a long and somewhat volatile ride but I couldn't be happier with the outcome. There's definitely been some bumps along the way, but YYGs has gotten us here.
