For a couple of years I've been troubled with this issue. Some wav sound files I have, while working fine in Quicktime, Windows Media etc. when uploaded to Game Maker come up as a silent sound effect.

When I click the play button next to the sound (the one next to "Load Sound") there is nothing to be heard. I thought it was just the game editor, but when I played the sound in game I can't hear anything either.

Yet sometimes if I convert the sound file to a MP3 it mysteriously starts working (albeit via the Multimedia player which I'd rather not have).

Why does this happen? Does Game Maker just not support certain pitches/tempos/frequencies?

I've noticed this happens if you try and add way too many sound files (like 100+) That's all I really know.

No, it doesn't seem to be that. I only have 15 sound files, and the "working" sound effects continue to work at all times irrelevant of the amount of files already present.

And I've opened them in new projects that have nothing else in and they still do not work....

Oops, missed some info.
I'll bet it is a problem with your computers codecs.
Or it might be a GM problem. What version?

'scuse double post, but is there a way to solve this, or do I need to keep on with the Multimedia player (it's great and all but struggles to play more than one sound at a time....).
