Hi. I have created a game that works flawlessly, but that isn't what I'm asking a question about.

I downloaded a .invs file from a random site on the internet and uploaded it in my global game settings for the icon you're supposed to see in your dock when you run the game. However, not only can I not see it in the dock, I can't even see it on my computer when I click on it!

I know it's there, if I right-click and hit "view package contents" and search through a bit, I can find the file.

And I know that it's a .invs file I'm supposed to be using. .ico dosen't work.

And lastly, I know the file isn't corrupt. I can open it with preview and everything.

If you wanna know, I'm running snow leopard on a 15 inch core i7 macbook pro, about 6 months old, and using the pro version of GM4mac. I open it using GM Launcher, but I'm sure that doesn't have anything to do with it either.

Anyway, please help, I need to have it finished by tomorrow. I could submit it without the icon, but it wouldn't look as cool. Thanks!

P.S. This is the first time I tried to do this, and I'm logged into the administrator user.

EDIT: The .invs file is inside the folder named resources (when I click "show package contents") and it's called YoYo70.invs
There is also a "unix executable file" entitled YoYo70 (without an extension) within the file "MacOS".
Transferring the file YoYo70.invs into the MacOS file stops the game from loading
Copying and pasting the file lets the game load, but has no effect on the appearance of the program, even when restarting my computer.
Copying and pasting the "unix executable file" into the resources folder similarly has no effect.
I'm afraid to change the extension of the YoYo70 file, so I haven't tried that, but given what I've done already, that shouldn't have any effect on the program.
And lastly, copying and pasting the .invs file onto my desktop, then closing the "package contents", right-clicking my program and selecting "get info", and dragging the .invs file into the icon will change the icon into a picture of a file recognized by preview, with the letters INVS underneath, but not changing it to the image itself. The extension is not affected, and can be run normally. Still need help, please.

U have to create a *.icns file (just like Dangerous_Dave pointed out) and replace it with the one *.icns (YoYo70.icns ; make sure to exactly "replace" this one, not just pasting a new YoYo70.icns. Best is to delete the old YoYo70.icns and put a new one with the exact same name in it) file which is located in APPPackage -> Contents -> Resources, then it works perfectly (for me at least :)

EDIT: Oh and, I probably missed this part in your #1 Post, but u have to download a App which can build .ICNS files. iPhoto can't edit *.icns files

Mac OSX comes with an app called Icon Composer, that takes PNGs (or whatever) and turns them into an icon.

Folder? It's a Mac, you just type what you want into spotlight and it finds it!

Well I don't know about yours, but my Mac seems to have folders, and Spotlight doesn't find all the contents which are on my hard drive, especially things which not every user-account may access.

Mine probably has folders, but I don't have a need to go looking through them. I also only have one account, but I'd expect that spotlight would index anything the account could access (I've never found a file that spotlight didn't index, except for hidden files and stuff in ~/Library).

If it's not in spotlight, it's not worth using. I'd assume it didn't exist, and be on the internet looking for a tool to do the job. Which I guess that's what you did :P

There is a much easier solution for this.

Step 1: Find the icon or image you want to use.

Step 2: Place image in "MacOS" folder (just in case).

Step 3: Open image with Preview.

Step 4: Select part or all of the image and then copy.

Step 5: Right-click the game app and then select get info.

Step 6: Click the little icon near the top of the get info of the game app.

Step 7: While the icon is "selected," go up to Finder menu and select "paste." That's it!

By the way, I only said to place the image in the "MacOS" folder just in case the icon disappears. It shouldn't though because I've got folders using icons that have been around for years and have no idea where the images to them are. And, I've just tried this with my game app and it ran fine (other than the bugs GM has been lazy about fixing). Good luck!

P.S.

If you have an app or folder from something that has an icon you like and want to use (with "permission" of course) all you got to do is "get info" on both the game app and other app/folder and select the desired icon, copy, and then select the icon in game app's "get info" and paste as mentioned in the above steps but without the need of an editor.
