PROTOZOA WARRIORS

Protozoa Warriors is a tower-defense game (TD). Tower-defense games are games where you must build an ideal defense system against different waves of enemies in attempt to not let them pass a path. Tower Defense games usually have towers that shoot at enemies which have different abilities, cost different prices, can be upgraded, etc. There can also be different levels of enemies. The game is titled “Protozoa Warriors” because of the microscopic setting with different bacteria, viruses, parasites, etc. This is a new twist on TD games as they usually are war-based or something similar. Instead, there are towers that shoot enzymes, acid bursts, etc.

Note: I am changing this release to a demo, as there *might* be a commercial release of this game.

You can view videos here: http://www.youtube.c...h?v=ohLxmh3n6Y4
And here: http://www.youtube.c...h?v=mKqE6LnKxZw

The game is made up of 70 preset waves and 5 levels where you fight against the "Pods", bacteria/fungi, parasites and viruses, advanced parasites and viruses, and eventually the final boss, The Proto Demon. There are also over 20 enemies and 7 towers!

The game might seem hard at first, which is why a put in a few cheats to help you out... Seriously don't ask about how I came up with the names for these cheats. Actually, I didn't. My crazy friend did whose obsessed with weird words like "boon" and "bongos". To enter a cheat, press "Insert" on your keyboard, and then you will be able to type the cheats below in.

Sure, I'll give it a go. Would you mind making it an exe instead of a rar first? I don't have the program to open them with.

Ya, I will just remove the video part and then it will be a plain exe! Just to tell you, WinRAR is the software to unzip them, if you didn't know that :).

You can also put it in a .zip file, Windows comes with a unzipper :)
To people with no WinRAR, wtf ?

Ok, I played it, gameplay wise its alright but you should really do something about the graphics.
The UI is unclear and looks ugly in my opinion.

Apart from that you seem to have a solid engine and a good start.

I've been playing this a lot, like, a LOT. I haven't, and won't, cheat.. Just a few questions.

Those ant-like things are sometimes attracted to Enzyme and ABMG's, and very rarely will destroy that tower, and are suddenly vulnerable to ALL weaponry. What is their official behaviour, and how do I reliably kill them?
The Acidic Spray seems to poison the bugs as they pass. How much damage does it do, it seems almost useless as the affect wears off within seconds.

Those are my main questions. I've pretty much developed perfect strategies for everything except Ants, and still have no use for my Acidic Tower.

Ya, I made the UI with GM's spriting effects in like 2 seconds, and made the graphics in 2 seconds also in photoshop. Thanks for saying I have a solid start though!

Thanks for playing! Anyways, the "ant-like things" are actually bacteriophages (which should be 100 times smaller, but so what), and they are VERY glitchy. They are supposed to go around and attack your towers, with a chance of destroying them and reproducing, but I only was able to program them to destroy Enzymes and ABMGs. The point of them was to just ruin all of your tactics, lol, by destroying those towers that you placed by the path. The Acid Spray is actually more effective than you might think. Every 20 steps, for 100 steps, the enemy's health goes down by 10 points. So each wave of acid deals 50 health points over time.

Well that's not helpful, because I have nothing to base those numbers off of. Nothing has any visible health data so "50hp" means nothing. You might as well say 5000hp. :)

Oh, well, I am dumb... Lol. The average health is around 100-200 hp, but the early creatures could have as little as 25 points. The final boss is 3000 points, and trust me, it is HARD to kill :) (I think... Tell me if you kill it!)

I killed it several times. I have a few strategies.

I actually killed the boss without even having a single tower hurt it. I used the bubbles.

Fix the Ant problem, and fix the lag that occurs when you use lots of MML's (I think it might be a leak with the particle systems but it always lags when I have 50 or so MML's on screen during waves 40-70) and I'll actually make a review video of it! :)

Dang, it's even hard for me to get up to wave 70 :). I will fix those. The particle system is just a placeholder until I get explosion animations. And the ant-things (again, there bacteriophages but it would be funny if you always refer to them as "ant-like things" lol) we will just have to see about... I spent hours of work on them, but they glitch out so much... I will work on them more, and probably fix all those little glitches. :) A video review would be awesome, so I will fix those bugs and glitches as soon as possible!

I just speed-ran it in about 6 minutes and ended with 5700 bucks, using 25 towers. I also ended with 14 lives but never noticed when they went up.

I'd appreciate a good, brief guide to the game, not in-depth on every enemy, but basic stuff like "Enemies have from 50-2000 hp" and what each tower does, etc.

Btw, I decided not to build a single Enzyme or ABNG, so by the end of the game I had like 20 ants just wandering around harmlessly.

Cool. I was actually just designing a game guide. Good tactic with the Enzyme and ABMG, but when the ant glitch is fixed, you won't be able to use that anymore :) Just out of curiosity, do you like the game? What would you rate it on a scale of 1 to 10? Thanks

As a final product, it would be a 6. Where it is going to be is a 9. You've done well.

Just make sure to have in-game info, the player needs to know stuff! I had to figure out the costs of most towers by myself, for example, so have little popup tooltips when you hover over them.

Also, ABMG's (anti-bacterial machine gun?) are pretty weak, I find MML's to be much more bang for your buck. Utilizing their splash damage is key. Snipers, too, are weak (or at least, I can't see their affect much). They need to CLEARLY show the damage they've done. Little health bars would be great.

Oh and work on selling the towers. I misplace them and I have to restart. One of my strategies is to place a Sticky Slime JUST within range of the path (btw, make the path visible, use draw_path I think.. Or something..), because that Sticky Slime will then slow down EVERY unit instead of just the first. However, this is my exploit around your small error- Towers go for the unit nearest to it, but don't re-adjust until it's dead. My first preference would be for the towers to hit the FURTHERST ALONG unit, IE, the one with the largest path_position, but my second preference is simply the nearest one at all times. Either way, don't make them track units.

Finally, I'd go ahead and change the characteristics of the Enzyme tower. It would be much more strategic for it to shoot the unit with the LOWEST health within range, as it's quick but weak. The Sniper tower, as I mentioned before, could use a small change, too. It either needs to be much more dramatic, or, should do COPIUS amounts of damage the more "head-on" the shot is.

Tower Defence games are the best when each tower is drastically different, with very different personalities. This naturally lets them take interesting combinations- My favorite right now is to combine a Sticky and an MML so that the Sticky groups the creeps together, allowing the MML to do damage to all of them with it's splash.

One more small thing, make it so I can click on Bubbles to delete them (for 15 dollars back or something).

Anyway, that's my rant. To summarize, the game's definitely going places, but you need to give each tower extremely well-defined and complimenting personalities, you need a bit more user-feedback for pretty much all your actions so the user has some information to run with (more strategic stuff then), and you need to fix up the ants, which have potential to be devastating, but need to be detectable. I think of them as air-units, maybe only certain towers can hurt them. The sniper could simply be re-worked to an ANTi-ANT gun :P

Thanks for the help! I will fix all this stuff. The "ANTi-ANT" gun was actually in the planning stages, just difficult to implement. The ABMG's (anti-body machine gun, lol, you were close!) are pretty weak, I will have to fix that also. I just plain forgot about the selling the towers option, and I will fix that. And one more thing: Do you think that, if I fix everything, it will have the potential to be a commercial game?

Hey, I just tried your game. Thanks for putting the exe up!
It's really fun, but... uh... I beat the game on my first try with 12 lives remaining. I'm not sure whether that's a good or a bad thing...
But like I said, it was fun. I would have kept going if the game didn't end at level 70. There's lots of variety, and once you get the hang of the game it's pretty easy. I like the idea you have with the bacteriophages, once you get that down I'm sure it'll be a lot more of a challenge.
One thing I find is missing from your game is some user feedback. Like, how much do towers cost? What do they do? How much health do enemies have left so I can accurately gauge my towers' attack strengths??? I wouldn't have known about the bubbles if I hadn't skimmed the topic beforehand, and I wasn't aware that they cost money until I ran out. You may also wanna make a grid-based placement system so placing towers is less of an exercise in conserving space for anything else you put in.
It's a good game, though. As for your question, polish off the graphics, add some descriptions, put in difficulty levels, and yeah, you just might end up with something commercial.

Hey, thanks for playing and saying it was fun! Ya, it was supposed to be easy, and then when the bacteriophages (or ant-like things, lol) come in, the game will get ten times harder. Anyways, I will make a game guide to clear up confusion, add difficulty levels, fix graphics, and fix the bugs. I will make a little pop-up that tells you how much the towers cost, or something like that when you hover over it, or maybe just a menu that tells you everything. And also, I just played and beat the game too, so it does need a bit more challenge... Thanks for the feedback!

Hey guys! The 0.7.2 alpha will be coming out soon. It will include a completely new UI, bacteriophage (ant) behavioral upgrades, and a new tower specifically designed for bacteriophages, along with some other graphical up, etc. Thanks! Anyone else want to play?
