I'm going to invest in a Mac, primarily to be able to export my games for Mac, and have a couple of questions regarding compatibility:

  • Before I buy, I need to decide which version of OSx to get - Snow Leopard or Lion. I've heard conflicting information about whether Gm4Mac works on Lion. Can someone confirm whether or not it works? If so, are there any problems or disadvantages over Snow Leopard? I read something about "sandboxing" on Lion; could this cause any problems?
  • I've read that extensions and DLLs don't work unless they're "shared files". What exactly is a shared file in this context, and how is it relevant to Game Maker?
I've done a lot of research, but couldn't find the answers to the above questions. I would really appreciate if someone who knows their stuff could offer some information. Thanks

Thanks for your reply. I'm actually quite content with Game Maker 7, which is apparently what GM4Mac is, so I'd just like to find the best version of OSx to run that on.

That's what I meant by conflicting information. Some sources say Lion is compatible, some make no mention of Lion (like the one you posted), and others say it isn't compatible.

I would take that info (YoYoGames), because some people say GM:HTML5 isin't windows 7 x64 compatible and it works perfect for me :P

I've got GM4MAC and it works without problems on my MacBook Air running Mac OS X Lion, so you can buy it confidently.

Hmmm.... Strange... My Windows 7 64-bit detects an 'Incompatible Application' when I use the troubleshooter. Even with Admin and UAC off, still gives no window.

(I personally would not risk it, I meet the requirements and nothing. GM8.1 or HTML:5)

I've been running GM8/.1/HTML5 on Windows 7 x64 with no problems (UAC on, not running as admin). I have heard it can cause issues with licencing if you install GM as admin and run it without (or maybe it was the other way around), but that just made it revert to Lite.

I'm running OSX 10.7 Lion on a 2010 iMac and i bought GM4Mac through the App Store and it runs as it's makers intended, although it has a few odd bugs, i encountered that in the lite version in Snow Leopard before i upgraded so that is not an OSX Lion issue. :D
