I have seen many topics about this issue, but not any recent ones or ones that helped me.
I need to know if i can (still) upgrade my 8.0 to 8.1 free. Am I too late? I really want to, but I don't know if I ever could or can still.
Can I do this? If so how?

On the 2nd page of the purchase process, enter your purchase ref number from your original GameMaker Pro 8.0 email receipt into the coupon field. The purchase amount will then become $0.00, instead of $39.95.

Then click on the PayPal buy button - you won't go to PayPal if the amount showing is $0.00. Then you will then see your generated licence key.
Copy and paste it into Notepad and save it. An email will be sent that contains the key, but save it now just to be sure.

Today, I just upgraded GM lite from apprentice book to GM8 and paid $39. I have reference number and tried the process above from japjap and it shows and invalid #, requested the # again and still shows invalid. I actually don't want 8.1 but studio with html module. I probably should've just bought studio with 5 module. I actually want the full boat of studio with html, android and ios but don't want to pay $600.

-.- Studio is a seperate product - a GM8 license won't give you that. Only the (old) GM:HTML5 were elligible for upgrading to studio (base + HTML5 component, not android/iOS runner).

If you had bought gm:html5 thenyou would have got a free upgrade for studio mac, pc, html5. However you would still need to buy ios and android. The reason there is no upgrade for gm8 to studio is because it's a very old product and cost 5% of studio.

I have GM 8.0 and I have tried upgrading to 8.1 several times but I never got it to work. I had the same issue as you with it saying the number was invalid.

This doesn't make any sense. Why would you pay $40 to upgrade Lite to GM8, when you can purchase GM8.1 for the same price?

Are you sure you upgraded to GM8? When did you do this?
