Mostly bonus content that's not post-game, actually. If I add boss rush, it'll probably be as visible as the current "survival mode", or perhaps it'll just be kept as a secret. To make it visible like Survival mode, it would need to be in a separate menu, probably alongside Survival mode, since the title screen menu is out of useable space.

The NCFC bonus will probably be shared pretty openly at NCFC, but undocumented (so, an NCFC exclusive secret, so to speak). The password will almost certainly just be "NCFC".

It seems like it would be a bit of a shame to keep that content that well hidden. I think you should at least hint at it somewhere, like putting it in a really small font in the corner of the screen on the main menu.

That's kind of what I want, too! I want someone to be as good as me so bad that I've been avoiding submitting scores in the fear that that will discourage people from even trying.

I'm trying as hard as I can. Posted Image It just makes such a big difference being a developer... I'm afraid you're going to have a hard time finding somebody to compete with you. I've come close a few times... but if you're holding back scores... Posted Image

Not better scores, just scores that make the list. I don't want the high score list to be filled with "onpon4". :)

Alright, this is the last update before the NCFC version, which I hope will be a big one.

Anyway, this is version 1.5.0. It can be found in the first post as always. Changes are:

  • The Survival option in the main menu has been replaced with an Extras menu, which includes Survival mode.
  • Boss Rush mode added; it can be found in the new Extras menu.
  • You now only need to type in the codes for World 666 and Select Mode once; after that, you can access them at any time in the Extras menu. You can still type the respective passwords to get to them if you like.
  • It is now possible to clear the local high score lists; just choose the "Clear Lists" option directly above the lists in the high score screen.
  • Though this is undocumented, I left in a "god mode" that I added in for testing purposes, which constantly restores all of Bowser's health and stamina and reduces your score to 0. You can enable and disable this by holding down the "G" key for 3 seconds; you will hear a sound when you hold the key for 3 seconds (a flame sound when enabled and a spit sound when disabled).

EDIT: I've made a bugfix release, 1.5.1. Fixes a few small bugs, slightly modifies Boss Rush, and makes it so that you don't lose the level's score if you get a game over (which has little difference in most modes, but means you can get a high score in World 666 even if you don't beat it, potentially). Also, even though 13 lives are still listed in World 666, you now get a game over in that mode after losing one life regardless; the 13 lives don't actually do anything anyway (it's just a little joke, really), and this prevents good scores achieved without winning the level from being lost.

Of course, 1.5.1 is found in the original post.

You should make the continue message box appear instantly when you get a game over. I think the wait is a bit too long as it is to happen for each death, especially when going for a high score.

Edit: And remove the music for it too - it gets annoying fast.

To be perfectly honest - I think you should try posing the option of submitting the score differently, as getting a game over every life feels really odd (especially when you're told you have 13 lives).

You can stop the music and show the continue box by pressing Enter or Backspace, if that helps.

I do kind of want to replace the message box with something more like the Super Mario All-Stars continue screen, though, which would show the menu from the beginning. We'll see, it depends on how easy or difficult it is (thinking about it, it's probably an easy task).

To be perfectly honest - I think you should try posing the option of submitting the score differently, as getting a game over every life feels really odd (especially when you're told you have 13 lives).

I was thinking that, too. It would be better if World 666 uniquely checked for high scores each time you die rather than just at game overs. I'll look into that.

As an aside, I think I should mention: I think the NCFC bonus will most likely just be a small cutscene (taking place in the title screen room). There's just too much stuff on my belt at the moment (NALC, my next project, plus there are some things I want to port to the Pandora) and adding all that extra stuff in BLS is a great way to put me off track. So rather than being version 1.6, the version with the NCFC cutscene will be a release of version 1.5, and it'll be released as soon as it's done (since you need to know the code to see it anyway, and I won't be announcing it outside of here and the NCFC 2012 booth). Typing the code (or, after that, selecting the NCFC option in the Extras menu) will hopefully do something in 1.5.2, though probably just a message saying "The NCFC message isn't ready yet" or something to that effect.

EDIT: I've made that update, 1.5.2. You can download it from the usual places. Changes are:

- All-Stars style menu instead of a message box on the continue screen
- World 666 doesn't always gives you a game over, but checks for high scores on each death
- Typing "NCFC" shows a placeholder message

EDIT 2: A bit earlier than expected, but version 1.5.3 is now available for download; it includes the NCFC cutscene (type "NCFC" to see it).

Sadly - GM Highscores and Clockwork are shutting down on the first of February - so you're going to find somewhere else to put your scores. Posted Image

Yup there other easy alternatives, one of them is GMech. I personally like it since its easy to integrate and you can customize it easily and you can also add a public chat with it :D (I would like to see your game with a chat to talk with other people that are playing the game at the same time i do ^_^

Alright, new update, version 1.6.0. Here's a list of changes:

- Changed from GMHighScores to GMech for online lists, since GMHighScores is shutting down soon.
- Turnip toads are now colored differently than regular toads.
- The stamina bar is now placed over a solid black background rather than a red gradient, since this was confusing to some people.
- The high score list now enforces a character limit on names to prevent the name from overlapping or being right next to the score (i.e. keep the high score table from looking weird).

Absolutely wonderful. You get to do everything you would ever expect Bowser to do. Except death by radish... That's weak on Bowser's end.

Thanks. :)

Stay tuned, because I'll be releasing a small update soon that should make Survival mode a lot harder; right now it just makes you have to go through the entire game without dying; I'm changing it so it replaces all large Toads with turnip toads and makes the bosses stronger. The update is almost ready; I just need to make some tweaks.

I think I'll also change the cutscene you get by typing "NCFC", to make it a small text-only teaser to the possibility of Bowser's Last Stand 2. Right now it's just a lame joke about how lazy I am and how restricted Bowser's contract with me is.

Would a sequel take the difficulty up a notch? Because I can imagine that given all the advice you've received - a sequel could be really fun. Maybe conscript a few more people to make levels to add in some flare?

I don't know. but that survival mode update sounds pretty evil. I think on top of that you should make some floor tiles and enemies that only appear in one difficulty. :P

Maybe you remember this, but I actually tried to get other people to make levels for Bowser's Last Stand 1. ;) Since nobody seemed interested, I ended up deciding to make them myself, and that was even the whole purpose of the "rapid-release cycle" (to pressure me to get the levels done, because otherwise I was taking ages to finish them).

Chances are, yes, the difficulty will by taken up. Bowser's Last Stand was supposed to start out easy to establish Bowser's power; BLS 2 doesn't need to do that as much.

I don't want to spoil too much (I have some really great ideas for BLS 2 or else I wouldn't have even considered it), but it will involve fighting more than just toads; also Bowser's minions, Mario and Luigi, and if I can get it to work right, Yoshi. There's a legitimate story behind it kind of similar to a video on Newgrounds I really liked (but with a connection to Bowser's Last Stand).

I think it's also not too much to mention that I'm hoping to add Giga Bowser as a powerup (and that the intro will somehow explain that Bowser thought of the idea of Giga Bowser from Megabowser). I'm not sure if I should make it a temporary powerup that makes Bowser invincible (kind of like Mega Mario in NSMB), or a more permanent powerup that does something else.

I don't know. but that survival mode update sounds pretty evil. I think on top of that you should make some floor tiles and enemies that only appear in one difficulty. :P

I'm considering that too and it would be an easy thing to do, but I'm just not sure where to do it...

I'll look into it.
