Someone on this forum was kind enough to link me to a download of Game Maker 7.0 a few weeks ago after I was unable to find it to put it on a new computer. Unfortunately, this seems to be particularly buggy. Here is a list of a few issues:

-blurry text in-game
-the vertical tabs on the right hand side of an object's properties window do not display text
-the debug window is missing several buttons
-much slower loading
-seems to run slower in general

I'm not sure if it has something to do with running on Windows 7 64-bit as opposed to Windows XP 32-bit, or if it I downloaded an older version of GM7, or something else. Is there a way to copy GM7 from my laptop without the installer? Or does someone have the absolute most recent version of GM7 I can try?

Edit: Copied files over from my laptop; that didn't change anything. I do not want to have to pay $40 to upgrade...GM7 was working perfectly on my laptop. I don't know why it's acting so peculiarly now.

Go to C:\Program Files on a 32-bit and look for a folder with a name Game Maker. Copy that onto a drive and then put that folder in the C:\Program Files (x86) folder of the laptop. However, licenses will NOT be transferred.

What you have described are problems that exist within GM7 and have been addressed in GM8. They won't be fixed in GM7 and that's one of the reasons that YYG's no longer has GM7 available for download.

Then do we need this discussion?

I do not want to have to pay $40 to upgrade...

But you're running GM7 Lite, right? You must be, because there's no way to register new GM7 installations.

Therefore, there's no need to pay $40. Just download GM8.1 Lite from the YoYo Games website.

I was able to register my GM7 with my old GM7 key a couple of months ago. I'm assuming that hasn't changed.
