On iOS the game will keep running (well stay in memory) for a while, so you don't usually want to quit, as you can swap back to it later. Only if it needs to will it be evicted.

So who else at the GMC is going to develop for the mobile devices? What's everyone's thoughts on GM Studio?

I can't wait for GMS to be released!
I'm definitely going to make some apps, but I am quite busy with another project at the moment. Still wondering about the price of Studio, though.

If HTML5 is around $200 when released, I suppose that Studio will be... 400?

It looks like HTML5 is actually staying at its Beta price of $99.99 which is a good price in my honest opinion. Anymore would be too much.

Also, as far as I know, Studio will only cost as much or as little as to how many file formats (iOS, Android, Mac, HTML5, etc.) you want to convert to.

I wonder if HTML5 will still be its own separate program once Studio is released..

NPT or someone else was talking about it.

I hope that is how they plan on selling on it. It would be very convenient. For instance, I don't own a Android phone, so I would have no use for that! So why not let YoYo Game's customers choose what file types they want.

I actually agree. This would be a fantastic way to sell GM Studio. Yes YoyoGames would have to delay GM Studio a bit to implement this but this would be a good way to sell GM Studio. I for one wish for Android and iPhone but not Mac.

We really should put this into the FAQ - but here goes..

GM9 will be cross platform on Windows and Mac (we hope for a Linux port too, but that is not definite), It will come in 3 flavours Lite, Standard and Studiio, these will be

Lite - traditional GameMaker Lite, some features will be locked (i.e. for Standard only) and it will allow you to target the machine you are working on (i.e. GM9 Lite on PC will target PC, GM9 Lite on Mac will target Mac)
Standard - same as Lite with extras (all the locked stuff now unlocked) and it will target the host machine just like Lite
Studio - Basic version will have everything that Standard does but you will be able to target other machines (PC or Mac) you will be able to purchase further target packs to target other machines (HTML5, iOS, Android, Symbian, Windows Phone 7, Cray, C64, ZX81...)

So to answer your version GM9 will be available for the Mac and you will be able to get Studio for it, we will be looking to roll out all these versions at once, so there will not be a delay per platform or anything like that.

I hope that answers your question...

Russell

P.S. The Cray, C64 and ZX81 were a joke, no we will not be porting GameMaker to those platforms....

Now is Russell saying GM9:Studio or does this apply to the GM8:Studio being released this quarter.

I think it'll be GM8:Studio and then when GM9 comes out, we'll see a GM9:Studio as well. Unless Yoyo bring GM9 in Q1 2012 as well.

In other words, it'll be GM8:Studio... unless it's GM9:Studio.

Nobody can argue with that. +1 for your infallible logic.

Score lol. Well tbf, that's all it can be right now. Mainly because other than "how to develop with gm studio" questions, it seems that Yoyo have their mouths shut on the details like release dates, versions, etc.

OK the post is quoted out of context I was clarifying things

This GM:Studio is from the GM8 family.... so we will have the full complement Lite, Standard and Studio (which will incorporate HTML5)

GM9 is coming (as soon as we can start it) and that will come in the same flavours..

the post was clarifying that GM9 WILL come in all the same flavours as GM8 will have....

Price has not been decided yet and is still under discussion at the moment.

Now that makes complete sense. Kudos Russell!

(How long has the price been in discussion?)

What is still not known and a few people would like to know is: is the GM:Studio (GM8 code-base) that is to be released shortly going to have separate, purchasable, target packs?

Your quoted post made it clear that's the intent for the GM9:Studio, but makes no mention about the GM8 based studio.

GM8:Studio will come as a base product with add on for each target device - prices are still in discussion though.

Base should include WIndows and Mac with separate packs for Android and iOS (and other runners as we add them).

Am I reading this correctly? GM9's development hasn't even started?

I thought GM9 has been in development this whole time.

So you don't mind not having a C++ GM (or atleast Runner, eh my knowledge is limited) indefinitely?

Some of us Mac users want a proper UI for GM for Mac.

Another question- how does GM:HTML5 play into this? Will it become an addon to GM8 Studio? What happens to existing copies? How does that work with the Studio discount for beta HTML5 users?
