SOTU 2 is a horror-platform-adventure game. It was made for the Scary 4 Digits competition over the course of a little less than a month by Bret Hudson and I(My first collab =D). Controls and stuff are all explained in-game.

Went and wrote a review on my blog for this game. It's fantastic and definitely one of your best.

Just a few comments on the game:
-Really liked the characters. They're creative and imaginative.
-Atmosphere was top notch and I actually jumped at certain freakish parts.
-Some music could've helped although the ambient track was rather nice as is.
-Some more checkpoints at crucial parts, like the lava bit, could've helped lower the frustration factor.
-Glueman is a beast.

Excellent job, overall.

hey man, i like these types of games. I played your first one a while back and liked it. these types of games are what keep me coming back to gamemaker. a suggestion I would like to add is when the room starts and you are already pressing the arrow keys, the character won't move until you re-press the arrow keys. depending on how you have the player object programmed, would it be possible to eliminate that effect by using a direct keyboard check? I don't have time right now to experiment, but it would do your game good to look into it I think. Otherwise, I really love what you're doing. Keep it up and keep having fun! =D

Thank you! ^_^
I know exactly what you are talking about, I don't think the problem is fixable though... I already use keyboard_check() and the problem seems to be something caused by GameMaker. Thanks for the feedback!

Unfortunately this game has not placed in the competition. Which is odd... I think it was rigged... I'm really surprised we didn't get any votes considering all this praise we're getting.

Orange, again I enjoyed this latest game in this little series. I certainly liked the boss fights, the mood was right, and the platform engine itself is pretty solid. Kudos on that, a lot of platform engines made with GameMaker don't hold up. If I were to critique one thing, it would be the lack of music. The ambiance works, but I can imagine a slow paced industrial track of some sort fitting right in. I guess it just feels a bit more empty because the first game had a fantastic music track!

Good job on this one, the lava scene was sweet man, and that miner was a foolish and greedy little man! SOTU 3?

I meant to try keyboard_check_direct(). Its supposed to be able to check the hardware directly. I dunno. Maybe I'll test this out and let you know what works later in an edit.

EDIT:

yup. it seems to work buddy. check it out. the code i used is completely simple man. check it out

EDIT AGAIN:

i tested out the same code using keyboard_check() and it appears to still work. the problem only becomes evident when you try pressing left and right at the same time to stop the motion and then continue the motion between rooms. this does not happen with the version i uploaded above. if this helps you at all then you are welcome. no credit is needed. i would just enjoy seeing your games work as they were intended to =P if you decide not to use this, then no hard feelings. i still love this style of game.

@Knuked
I thought the lack of music would contribute to the game's "scariness". I guess not. I may update the game with a track, now that you mention it you're not the first guy to suggest music.
SOTU 3 will have to wait, I'm trying to make some more experimental things now :)

@mimsi
Sometimes when you go into another room it will not make you have to re-press the movement key. It seems to only happen occasionally. For now, it's okay. (By the way, I use GM 8.0 so I can't open your GM 8.1 file)
Thanks for helping out! :)

SOTU 3?! You're a greedy little man! :P Haha. Hopefully orange will ask me to collaborate with this one as well if we ever make it. We have a way that it could be done, so just you wait. ;)

Ah, yes, this. I already played it a while back. :thumbsup:

I wish more people would create games like this.

It is:
Short
Interesting
Simple
Fun
Original
Memorable
Beautiful (and ugly)

Great game.
