Cactus; looks a little strange

So, I whipped together a little program that creates sprites from scripts; i.e., a script draws stuff onto a surface. After I put it together, I've been adding plenty of groups of scripts to generate images. Some of them aren't that bad really, and after creating and adjusting the script, I get as many images as I want.
However, I made one to generate random cacti from a top view:

It just doesn't look right... I don't really know what to do to sharpen it up. Suggestions?

Has no base, looks like the arms are on the ground, other than that maybe just a different colour palette, dusty/light shades of green and sand dustings.

Maybe add some ridges like on those cactus which have shadows.

i have 1 suggestion to make it better: make the arms just a tiny bit smaller.Hope this helps. really like it so far
