I want to make sure i know what i'm getting into before i drop $100 for this. I didn't see any trial period for it, so i have a few questions first:

I do not have any programming experience. Will i be able to create social networking games with the HTML5 version? If so, how difficult will it be to do?

How difficult is it to deploy to FaceBook?

I am interested in making persistent browser games that many of players can play, asynchronously or synchronously.

Game Maker HTML5 is basically Game Maker 8.1 with a html5 (aka javascript) compile target. There are additional functions unique to GM:HTML5 such as being able to get the height and width of a browser, or being able to bind views to multiple <canvas>.

So, if you're unsure then try the lite version of Game Maker 8.1. It will give you a feel for Game Maker, and more of an idea if you want to spend $99 on it. However, please note that the $99 price tag is special offer until it comes out of Beta, which it will then raise to (as far as i remember) $199.

You can find Game Maker 8.1 lite here: http://www.yoyogames...memaker/windows

I currently have the free version, but i don't see any way of making a browser game with it or a multiplayer game that operates outside the same keyboard. It seems to only be able to make games for download in a PC.

Will i be bale to create social networking games with the HTML5 version on FaceBook or not?

The short answer? Yes...

The long answer? That depends on you. You first will have to learn how to use GM (8.1 OR HTML5) to create games. Then you will need to perfect your skils and learn about how networking and things work. Then (if you don't already have it) you will need a copy of GM:HTML5. Then you will need to learn a bit of PHP, Javascript and HTML5 as well as how to use the JS extensions system in GM:HTML5 and make your games as light, fast and optimised as possible. Then you will need to make your game, host it and add it to Facebook.

So, if you are serious about doing this, I suggest that you start with GM8.1 lite and make a couple of simple 1 player games. Then if you like it and it goes well with you, move up to HTML5 or Standard and try your hand at a 2 player multiplayer game. THEN move up to multiplayer on a larger scale. All along the way, you will find the forums here offer many tutorials and help and support for you too!

That was an awesome answer, thank you.

To expedite the process, do you think i can hire someone in this forum that already has all of the experience to built the game?

Yes but they would want a considerable amount of money.

Although Game Maker was designed to be easy to learn and develop with, there is still a learning curve involved, you can't expect to download a copy today and have a game on Facebook tomorrow, not to mention the time to actually develop the game.

I am sure someone here would be glad to help you create a game, or even do it for you, but there is no way anybody could even give you a ballpark figure on what (or if) they would charge to do it without knowing anything about the game you are trying to create. Games vary widely in scope and how much it takes to make one.

If you wish to hire somebody -and are serious about it-, I'd have to be honest and tell you to look further than this forum. You may always post a team request post (in the appropiate forum). However other -more specific- indie boards are much better when forming these teams.

If you can't decide whether to spend $99 dollars on GM:HTML5, you should probably avoid hiring someone to build your game.... at least for now.

Just purchase GM:HTML5 and start experimenting. Also, check out other members' games (here and on Facebook). After a while, you'll be in a better position to decide whether to hire anybody.

Better yet, you might just learn enough to build the game yourself.

Go download GameMaker Lite, it'll give you a fair idea of what GameMaker:HTML5 does - and it's free!

If you want to make a the game yourself I suggest using Lite like Make.Daily suggested, then using eRun to embed it into a website until you are sure you want to spend $100 on HTML5.

Also If you want to pay someone to make the game I would not suggest using game maker. Find a programmer in another language like Javascript or Flash. They fees will be about the same, but flash and Javascript will probably run a bit faster.

Using eRun with your game maker games will limit you to windows only for the operating system.

Why find a programmer in another language? And Game Maker HTML5 uses javascript. Please don't post when you don't know what you're talking about.

But eRun is free, that is why I suggest it to everyone who is considering HTML5, and just wants to test GM out first, or doesn’t have the money to buy it, and wants to be able to still post games in browser.

Yes, I know HTML5 uses Javascript, but it is slower than a well made game in Javascript not using HTML5. It is also a bit less flexible since there is no easy way to edit the raw JS code.

This is worth the money. I can now provide games directly from my website instead of requiring everyone to download them. There are Pros and Cons. But, Consider this. This new release just gave gamemaker 8.1 almost the same amount of cons.

Most games I have made just need a small pinch of tweeks and they work fine with GMHTML5. Playing in the web browser allows for some intersting things in the near future. The one I am looking forward to is Linking Objects to other web pages with <a heref></a>. This will allow for pop up screens from within the game making it harder for someone to steal your hard work. Such as, "visit this publisher" button.
