Hello Game Maker users,

Some time ago me and the rest of my team (LAGamers) finished the game 'A New Home' which is a 3D rts (real time strategy) game. We programmed a 3D Terrain editor along with the game to help us 'construct' and 'paint' the maps. This terrain editor was later named 'Absolute World'. Absolute World contains texture editing, height changing, easily editable water layers at any height (could also be used as lava or anything else), an interface that lets you add your 3D models over the terrain, a day and night system, snowing, objects floating over the water and of course, the ability to import and export your maps as .absed.

Trivial: We participated in a game programming contest held by the University of Cyprus in Nicosia at which we were announced to be the first place winners.

Demonstration:
Here is a video demonstrating a simple terrain editing. A link to a more detailed demonstration appears in the description of that video.

We are currently working on a new 3D game which contains its own more advanced 3D Terrain Editor so we probably won't spend time in fixing bugs of 'Absolute World'
or adding new features. However you are able to remove the already existing 'A New Home' models/maps/layers, add your own ones, edit it as you wish and load the map in your game as long as you give credit. (Read 'Read Me.txt' for more information).

Please give feedback so that we can improve our new terrain editor and publish it when ready.

Download:
Here is a link to download the zip file which contains Absolute World (.gmk & .exe) and a sample of terrain maps and 3D models which were used in the game 'A New Home'.
Important: Before using this program read the 'Read Me.txt' file for more information.

Why that's quite good. But will it run good in-game?

PS: Open-source?

Thank you for your reply Shadowrend. What exactly do you mean by 'good'?

Edit: Yes, the gmk file is included in the zip

As in FPS. Having a crap-load of poly's for the trees terrain etc, and for example in a FPS, bullets, guns particles more models etc, will lower the framerate. And also the shift to release mouse didn't work. Also you should wanna take a look at my GM WinAPI if you want to change the interface. (see sig)

Yes one of the disadvantages of this editor is the fps reduction by the terrain's polygons although in our game 'A New Home' we managed to keep it at maximum a fps on a good laptop but we had to spend much time on finding ways to increase it.

As for the shift I'm not sure, I have to test it again and edit the file since It's been a while since I last used this program. It should be control or alt if it's not shift.
Yes I took a look at your GM WinApi and it's really interesting. I am thinking on using it on our new in-progress 3D Terrain Editor. Thank you : )

@loverock125

I am making an rts game as well and I seem to be having some problems deciding - should I make it 3d or an isometric 2d? For me, I prefer 2d as it takes a lot less code to find paths on a 2d flow map, but it means someone else would have to draw all the sprites (e.g 19 sprites for every unit and 4 for every building, not to mention the terrain). I can model, but I can't draw sprites, so in that way, 3d has some advantages.

Woohoo!
Nice. You should be able to choose in-editor how many polys the max amount is.
