Dark Woods (GM)
Posted Image
Created by Chris Vergilio
Based on "Dark Woods 2" by Jocke The Beast

Download: Host-A-Hosting 4.98 MB
Comes with both Original Format version ["Dark Woods (GM).exe"] and 160% Scale version ["DWGM (160%).exe"]
Also includes instructions for Level Designer, and the source code for it.

Dark Woods (GM) is largely based on the DOS game "Dark Woods 2", an ASCII adventure game with a custom level designer! Think of this as my take on the game. I was greatly inspired by it and wanted to test my skills by replicating the gameplay as best as I can. This game also features the Game Maker Extension Internal Beeps, for DOS-esque sounds! (Can be turned off in "settings.ini")

The game itself only features 5 levels, so try and make your own levels to share with us here! I also will be working on new levels to be released here :)
To complete a level, defeat all enemies!

Controls:
Arrow Keys - Movement
Spacebar - Use sword (arrow keys for direction)
S - Fire arrows (arrow keys for direction)
M - Cast magic (unsupported, see "README.txt")

Tile Key: What Each Thing Does

Custom Levels:
(Please email me or PM me your created levels! If I like them, I'll post them right here! :D)

IF YOU RUN INTO ANY ERRORS PLEASE INFORM ME!

Kind of saw this coming, almost 600 views and only 10 plays. I already knew the dislike for ASCII graphics here, but it was worth a shot. I'm still proud of it :)
But still, feedback would be nice

I played the game, it needs a lot of improving in the gameplay , its very weak because:

-I'm not fighting against orcs, but dancing with then to make sure that I don't get accindentally get killed.
-The only chalange in-game is the optional 50$ behind trolls.
-Speard controls, why?
-Game simply craches when you finish, needs a end mensage.
-Poor levels, always the same thing to do.
-Needs more game elements.

And why white walls if is a forest?

Bugs:
-Monsters can be hidden behind keys.
-Point blank shoot arrows are created after the monsters until finds a free space.
-If you try to kill a troll with a point blank arrow, you dies.(Could be a trollface death here.)
-The number of arrows is not reset when you dies, you can infinite times reset and get infinite arrows.
-keys too.
-Shoot arrow and run like a crazy to line up the enemy.
-Ctrl skips a turn but trolls don't move.
-Image in the topic don't tells about 50 disapearing when trolls are dead.
-Make better use of the space where the info is.
-Make the Readme and in game instructions more detailed and complete.
-Two 160% versions!?
-A exemple .txt will be usefull, I can't open .dat.

Kind of saw this coming, almost 600 views and only 10 plays. I already knew the dislike for ASCII graphics here, but it was worth a shot. I'm still proud of it :)

Yeah, people that only like grapics are stupid. But you annouces the ASCII graphics before, then you shouldn't recieve even visits, strange.
And the big majority of the people don't give negative reviews but I...

Good luck tring to improve the game!

A Review of FT94's "Dark Woods"

Dark woods is an attempt at an ASCII-Themed top down game.
After starting up the game, you're shown the main menu, it's quite simple to start the game, but there's no indication of any options menu, rendering the ability to change the game to how you see fit useless. After checking out the Instructions I began the game.

For an opening level you're challenged with just a few enemies and an easy level layout. I figured it was supposed to be easy, so I started moving and noticed the enemies (red things) started moving. I panicked and stopped, only to find that they also stopped. That's right, they move into a random position whenever you press an arrow key, which was quite annoying.

Anyway, I didn't know what I was supposed to do so I began attempting to kill the enemies. After a few deaths I was sucessful. It's somewhat a game of chance when you're challenged to kill them when they randomly move. I discovered that to get to the next area I had to kill everything and take all the yellow icons.

The next level was somewhat similar to the first, however it was slightly easier. I'll not be revealing too much.

The game itself is quite a nostalgic one if anything. I like the way the internal sounds were incorporated but it'd be better if there was an option to disable it or transfer it to traditional wav/mp3 sounds instead. The graphics are a nice reminder of the old ways but can be dull to look at. The gameplay was simple and repetetive.

Overall the game has a fair share of bugs and I wouldn't yet consider it finished.

Gameplay: ✦✦✦✦
Maintains that old ASCII feel however, flaws in the game let it down.

Story:
Non Existant story apart from the fact that you're in dark woods.

Graphics: ✦✦✦✦✦
The graphics do what they're supposed to although some may not like it as these graphics are rather dated.

Sound: ✦✦
The sound is great, for the first minute or so. Then you're pulling your hair out for a mute option. It's also internal sounds, so headphones won't work.

Value for Size:
The size is quite large considering what you get out of the game.

Overall: ✦✦✦
It's a challenging game that can be fun for a while, but it needs more elements to it to help it get that "addictive" feel I think it was going for.
