Looks similar to Steam forums Posted Image

Correction, the steam forums actually look good :)

Sorry, but that doesn't make any sense to me. The steam forum skin is even harder on the eyes. Higher contrast white on gray. Scroll down and read some of their posts.

How can you say the GMC skin is so bad... but the Steam skin looks good? Sounds a bit hypocritical to be honest.

Maybe it just looks better because it's not YoYo Games?

I don't like either of them. The Steam forum are even harder to read, but they aren't the forums in question. I'm quite certain that it's a web standard to NOT have light text on a darkish background. If it's not a standard, that's purely insane. My retinas are on fire.

Well, that was my point. How anybody could say they dislike GMC, while liking Steam, is beyond me. Steam is worse, for the same reason GMC is bothering some people.

And yes, the general consensus is that light text on dark background should be limited to things that don't require reading for extended periods.

That's why it's tolerable on the YYG site -- but not on the GMC. Nobody spends hours reading the YYG site.

Uh...

1) There's no login. I had to go into a forum, go into a topic, click on the Reply button of a post in the topic (because the Post Reply button is greyed-out and unclickable) and then be redirected to the login page to log in. So...there's that.

2) None of the drop-down menus...um, work. I hover my mouse over them, but nothing. Clicking on them does nothing, either.

3) So, the new layout for all the options pages and user CP and stuff...is kinda..."different." ... Yeah...

So, I guess my question is kinda, uh...who, exactly, thought it was a good idea to completely modify the basic functionality of the GMC without stopping to, you know, check that it actually worked first? I don't care one lick about cosmetics -- I have my browser highly customized, so I'm not even seeing your new colors (or fonts for that matter), I'm seeing the same visuals that I always see (because websites and development teams rarely choose good color schemes or fonts, so I just take care of all that on my end), but now, nothing works.

I'd really, really appreciate a response -- why did you modify the entire site (with no option to un-modify it) without checking to see whether it worked or not. Is this an April Fool's joke?

The new theme was created to match the website. This is a good thing :P

Yeah, no, it should sorta be the other way around. And by "sorta" I mean "absolutely." People spend all of fifteen minutes on the main site -- people spend hours and hours a day on the boards. Please the board users first, casual browsers second.

Give it time. Everyone will get used to it and life will go on once again.

Gonna be pretty hard to get used to no login and broken buttons.

what was the point of this exactly ?

No company that has ever existed has ever had the least speck of sense. Companies do pointless things that annoy their base all the time. Having worked at Microsoft for twelve years, I can tell you it's usually the result of one guy, a higher-up, who has this "vision." Everyone can see what a bad idea it is, but nobody is willing to oppose him for fear of their job security. So the idiot gets his way, everyone is pissed off, the company loses traffic or sales or what have you, and everyone on the sales team or web development team or whatever says "hey, look, we can't please everyone -- just try to get used to it" because they're all afraid to go against the edicts the higher-ups hand down.

So, to answer your question, there is no point. One high-up idiot got a wise idea, and the rest of us have to suffer. Which isn't 1/10th as bad as having to hear all the moderators harp on like Stepford Wives. "This is a happy time, this is a good thing. Nothing wrong here. Embrace the Future. Assimilation is fun ^_^" I can literally see the creepy smiles permanently etched into their faces. And it's creeping me the heck out.

This sucks. Big time. But the mods are gonna pretend it doesn't. Which wouldn't be so insulting if they didn't make this big show of "we want and value your feedback. Tell us what you think" and then stick their hands in our faces and ignore us. Don't pretend you give a crap about anything other than making a buck. Don't pretend to be interested in what people think of your decisions if you hold yourselves infallable. It's just aggrivating, and you're going to get nothing but grief for it.

TO FIX THE MENU DROPDOWNS

Get an add-on that lets you modify the CSS of the page.

Find the style: .yyg-header ul#menu li

Get rid of the "overflow: hidden" style. It shouldn't be there. Your dropdown menus will now work, and you can log-in and such.

Uhh...absolutely not. I'm not installing addons to my machine just to get your site to work. You modify your site to work with my standard browser, bub.

Note to All: I love dark backgrounds and light text. Looking at a light background with dark text is like staring at a lightbulb. I always prefer dark backgrounds and light text. I'm quite happy with the new color scheme, but it's abjectly irresponsible to modify a widely-used website without testing to see if it works first, especially when you give no revert option. If you give me the old functionality with the new color scheme, I'd be geeked.

If anyone knows of any non-official Game Maker forums, I'll happy abandon this one for that one. I don't care what site I'm using, I just want access to a forum full of people who use Game Maker so they can help me troubleshoot when I get stumped with GML. In fact, a fan site would be highly preferable to the official site. Official sites always suck. It's one of the core rules of the internet. Why do you think Wikipedia is such a runaway success? Users make all of the decisions, not some cabal of out-of-touch web developers.

I understand the main purpose of this switch was to ooze the yoyo-ness into it; however, it was done rather unprofessionally and without 'pizazz' - I spent all of 10 minutes in my trusty Photoshop hacking and slashing this sad attempt into something that's at least easy on the eyes and viewable without sunglasses. Additionally, my slapped-together Frankenstein of an attempt actually incorporates a decent amount of what the yoyo website looks like:

Posted Image

I know, don't laugh; if you tell anyone I actually made this, I will deny it. But it's at least in the right direction - can we get a website designer or some sort of design consultation board for this? In all honesty, the new board look is poor at best.

I do think some sort of forum-website unity is a good move, but it needs to be taken with at least some dignity.

Best,
Riley

EDIT: Don't look at the title - while even this one is better than the current one, it's a hideous atrocity and I refuse to believe I wasn't intoxicated while choosing that font.

Yeah uh...the buttons on top are not working and the font for the titles of the topic are bright but very stuck together. The Topic letters should be a bit smaller...
Not very satisfied with the re-skinning...Sorry :/

***NOT INTENDED TO ACTUALLY BASH YYG BUT RATHER POKE FUN AT THE HASSLES I HAD WITH THE RECENT RE-SKINNING.***
Quick, before YYG ruins it!  Go to the bottom, change the theme to IP.Board Mobile, and then back to YoYoGames theme!  No more crappy skin!  Or I'm just that lucky.. I dunno now.
***END OF RANTING/ANGRY/SOMEWHAT HUMOROUS COMMENTS.  NORMAL CONTENT TO FOLLOW.***

Okay, so with that moment of rage and hate lifted, time to give a few bits of info that HOPEFULLY YoYoGames will actually listen to.

In the "new" theme:

1. Userpage had some white elements, looked to be held over from the brighter theme color.
2. Changing theme from IP.Board Mobile back to YoYoGames results in bringing me to the previous design color (I'd rather you add the new color to the list and not change it, as despite my dislike for bright/white-ish themes, this one is very good on the eyes for me for some reason).
3. The navbar does not function.  At all.  I can hover over everything but no dice.  Everything is non-functional.
4. I couldn't login!  I could only login by attmepting to "quote" someone, get an error (stating I must login) and then clicking on the link.
5. Once I managed to login, I couldn't access the CP without clicking the only working link on the navbar - not my name, but the little icon for PMs.  Then I did what I had to do in the Control panel.
6. As a designer, I must say the Green/White/hints of Black and blue theme of either the old YYG site and this forum actually was easily 10x better.  Hell, if I am allowed I'd be willing to design up something - my web development skills are limited to HTML and CSS but at least I can come up with something that the devs over at YYG can expand upon - maybe I can try and learn (and create) a new forums system that might actually flow nicely.
7. The fonts you guys used were good for the site, as a design choice for logos and headlines but for forums, it really hampers readability at smaller signs.  Just stick with simple, plain, clean fonts (serif/sans serif - Segoe UI, Arial, Georgia, Times New Roman, courier, the usual) and the forum would look absolutely amazing (with enough work anyway, I'm sure.  Hell, if you wanna use something a bit different, maybe aim for Klavika or something.  It's pretty nice looking.  I use it on my own personal web site.

Am I the only one seeing the regular skin? I had the dark skin, switched it to the other skin, then switched it back, and YAY instead of the dark skin I have the regular one.

I like this new theme. It's light text on a dark background. It's a lot easier to read text this way. There are a couple of nitpicks that I have with the new theme though. Whatever, it's a new theme. It really doesn't matter to me what it looks like as long as it stays functionally identical to the previous theme...

...except for the whole rainbows and flowers and ponies like I explained in this post. If that day comes, I'm literally quitting Game Maker and going to C++. Fortunately for everyone here, YoYoGames loves me too much even consider that though. =D

Someone at YoYo is a ****ing idiot, not quite sure how else to put it. You dumbasses had a perfectly beautiful and working skin, then you go and break it with this ugle dark crap.

I could even get over the poor choice of colors if there was a ****ing log-in button!!! I had to try to reply and then get the error page just so I could log in. WTF? And the buttons at the top of the page do not work either. How do you not test this?

If somebody at Microsoft tried stupid **** like this they would be fired...

It will certainly take some getting used to, but I like it very much! Nice job on the theme. One thing, don't know if it is just me or not, (I am on Chrome) but the links at the top right (GMC, GameMaker, Games, Etc) aren't working when I click them.

Keeping it short, (and not a big ball of whining annoying crying from some users <_<)

I concur with much of the comments about "painful on the eyes" and drop down/login problems with this new skin.
So a negative for me.

Plus now..my graphic color pallet in my sig don't look good :( *Tear (the only crying you'll hear from me Ha :P )

This theme's aesthetics perfectly summarise every ten year old's conception of what is "cool"... which given your target audience, might well be deliberate, though you've effectively committed suicide in the professional software arena.

My eyes hurt. I don't mean that in a whiny fanboy who feels nostalgia two minutes after the fact kind of way, I mean in a I think I might have vertigo kind of way. The colour scheme feels like it was applied at random with no regard for contrast and visibility, and the gradients still look terrible.

As for something a little more urgent, the menu bar up top doesn't work at all in Chrome.

If you're willing to install GreaseMonkey, I have supplied a temporary fix for this:
