1) I live in America, so I believe in the first amendment, particularly:

or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press

and I count the "Manual Signature" as freedom of speech.

This isn't America.
If the admin felt like it, he could ban everyone in America and no law is going to stop him.

Just a note: the First Amendment, Freedom of Speech, only applies to situations where the government is suppressing your freedom to say what you want. It doesn't have anything to do with anything else.

True, true...but I also believe in Individual Rights! (I spent a whole year debating Individual Rights ;) ) And, I believe in "Freedom of thought and expression"...so...yea.

Anyway, along these topics, do you think using "..." gets annoying?

I find that I use it quite a bit...but I was wondering what other people think :D

EDIT: @IQbrew: granted, but I wasn't saying we were IN America, I just use the American spirit to influence my preferences about the manual signature :)

So we should bomb everyone that doesn't agree with IMP's point of view? And that those that are against signatures are the axis of evil in the GMC and we should go to war against them?

I don't know if this is the right place to put this (or if there's even a place to put this on the GMC), but I hope the mods will be nice enough to at least keep this open long enough for me to get a decent answer to the question.

Those who know me around here(and pretty much anywhere online) know that I always manually sign my posts/comments with "-IMP ;) :)". That's a signature that has a story behind it, but the point is that I sign my posts and have done so for about 5 years.

Now all of a sudden, people on other sites are complaining to me about it. Not just asking about it, but actively complaining. Their logic is that "we can see your name right next to your posts, so it's stupid and annoying for you to sign them". One person just went so far as to call it "spammy self-promotion".

Now, I sign my posts not for identification purposes, nor for promotion, but just because I think it's nice to take an extra 1 or 2 seconds to personalize what I write.

So I ask you: just because a signature is "unnecessary", does that really make it annoying or make it something I should feel pressured to stop doing?

Just FYI: my response has usually been "Why do you sign a snail-mail letter when your name is in the return address?" No one's answered this yet, but I've had at least 3 people on my case about this, and it gets old and frustrating fairly quickly, so I thought I'd ask around here.

-IMP ;) :)

I personally get annoyed by someone signing their post. As you've already stated, your name is displayed right above your avatar, I don't need an abbreviated version below your post - especially if it's only a single line long. I can't explain why it annoys me though, maybe it's because in some cases it could come across as quite 'cocky', or self loving. Technically it shouldn't annoy me at all because whether you sign your posts or not has absolutely no effect on me whatsoever in terms of effort or time consumption, and it doesn't exactly strain my eyes to read '-IMP'. It's not a major annoyance though, I wouldn't go out of my way to criticize you for it. I have better things to spend my time on, and I feel sorry for those that don't have anything else to do. You have the right to sign your post however you like, and if it annoys a few people in the process, who cares?

Personally IMP i think its fine, i never found it annoying, but i always thought it was kinda funny seeing the same ;) :) after everything you type. but its not really a problem. If its really a problem loose the emoticons because i can also see how they can be interpreted as 'Sarcasm' 'Attitude' or even 'Im better than you'. Even though its a far fetch you would be surprised how much people get from a simple emoticon these days. Like when i send messages to my girlfriend, if i dont include a smiley, a winky and a heart at least once in every message she thinks something is wrong and thinks im mad at her >_>

You should change it to

I'm not a fan of it. To use you as an example, IMP, we can see three different variants of your name a total of four times with every post you make. I think that's why some people are annoyed by you specifically when you do it.

I hate that crap, because I don't get it in return, and chances are she actually is mad at me.

I think 'manual signing' is plain silly. You already have the avatar, username, and real signature just blaring 'THIS IS ME!'. Why something else?

As for the 'freedom of speech' guys, American laws don't apply to us mods living abroad. So me and Nocturne could start a crusade against manual signing: we just don't want to.

I have a great excuse for manual signing: It notes the end of your post!

Yeah, it's not a good excuse, but an excuse none-the-less.

And this is why we have ethics. Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean everyone doesn't like it.

You make it sound like freedom of speech principles, is a uniquely American thing. It's not.

But then again this freedom of speech thread spawn is just stupid. But it always is, almost always when somebody introduces freedom of speech into a forum topic, they truly don't understand what freedom of speech really means.

I kind of like people who do manual signatures... It gives them more of a personality online.

And because I'm such a freedom of speech hater, I'll be locking this. And also because I think this topic has outserved its usefulness, if it ever had any.
