Earthbound Recreation

Ok then, back from the dead, been a while. I've been doing other stuff but I found the time to work on the project.
So what we got here is a few updates, I'll start with the bigger one first. I have added a money system. When you open up the menu(press x) or jsut there will be a slight pause just like in the real game, then the money box will appear. You can also open the money box by pressing z. Adding money works as well but I only have it set up for that in debug mode. Next we have chat sound effects, when texts appears in the text box the text sound plays.

Errr....and some bug fixes

How To Talk Using version Two:


Approach The phone or dog, and press space, You must be infront of the dog or phone to talk.. The text engine is pretty close to Original Earthbound's text engine, it was a pain to make but in the end it is worth it. Chances are It will be replaced in later versions as I said it was close to the original but not exact.

I think it has potential. What you're showing is incredibly rough, so I can't give a judgement yet. However, the walking still needs some work, and so do the npc's. Namely, walking diagonally is inexplicably faster than walking horizontally/vertically. Also, when more than two arrow keys are pressed, Ness' sprite freezes and he glides around, eventually past the camera. Regarding the NPC's, they work well with walls as far as I know, but Pokey/Porky did walk into Mom, and eventually I found him wandering outside the general testing area.

It'll be interesting to see if you can pull this off. Earthbound happens to be one of my favorite games. :)

EDIT: Also, the text engine looks and runs nicely. Wish I could talk to more things, though. What does the A key do?

The A button used to be used to talk to people instead of space. :chikin

Namely, walking diagonally is inexplicably faster than walking horizontally/vertically.


-As a response to this I tweeked the walking system.


Menu Controls


Press "x" to bring up the menu, use the arrow keys to navigate around the menu, you cannot walk while menu is up, you can use the talk to option to talk to people and the check option to interact with the statue. Press "z" to close the menu. (notice correct sounds).

Hey guys it's been a while, haven't updated in a while because I was working on another project, and gift bxes took a while to get right...
So I made a new space in my little debug room(Did I mention I'm working on maps?) which is full of gift boxes, using the menu use the check option while infront of a box (Facing up) and you will recive a item, check it your inventory to see if its there(It sould be) and keep opening boxes, when your full it will work just like the game and leave it closed....

Working on next is being able to use the items....

Woah! long time no see, but fear not I'm here with some new updates!
First off, Opening gift boxes gives you items, you can access the items via your inventory, hit the "x button" to access the item menu. The item menus allows you to drop, use, or "help" the item, it evens stops oyu from throwing away the important items, like the atm card....

Have you checked out the starmen community? It is an Earthbound fansite. I haven't been there in forever, but it had some demos, game resources and other things that might help you with your project.

A walking system isn't enough to warrant a download, but I love Earthbound.

It's cool that someone likes Earthbound enough to recreate it, but if you are only creating a replica... what's the point? The game is perfect as it is!

There's more then just a walking system, also , no I have not started on a battle system, I am trying to perfect the text system while also trying to make a shop, but I am gathering resources and also thinking of ideas for the battle system.

It's cool that someone likes Earthbound enough to recreate it, but if you are only creating a replica... what's the point? The game is perfect as it is!


Recreating the game will be a good experience for me to learn how to use game maker, that way when I'm done with this I will have a lot of experience so I can make my own games, also When I completely finish I will release the GM file so people can make fan versions.
