I'm running on Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit with Intel Core 2 Duo, Radeon HD 4600 series with 2GB of DDR2, and this error has never appeared before. Game Maker 7 works fine, and even though it hurts to say; a 8.0 launcher also does. However running legit 8.0 it wont launch and neither does 8.1. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

- Update Net Framework.
- Run directly from GameMaker's exe, NOT FROM THE UPDATER.
- Reinstall with the latest installer.
- Loose your head an reinstall windows. (it is as effective as un-recommended)
Good luck!

Weird error.. i have no idea what might cause it, but usually the updater is the one that screws everything up, so, options:
- Update Net Framework.
- Run directly from GameMaker's exe, NOT FROM THE UPDATER.
- Reinstall with the latest installer.
- Loose your head an reinstall windows. (it is as effective as un-recommended)
Good luck!
Already on the latest version.
Tried it, didn't work.

I've just formatted my HD and did that a few days ago, so I think this is not a very wanted option.
Anything else?

Anybody? I've reinstalled the .NET Framework, installed all updates in Windows Update, tried running Game Maker from the %appdata% folder, uninstalled, used CCleaner to remove any registry entries and installed again, tried installing on a different partition and none of those worked. I've googled around and only found this problem happening under certain machines running Delphi programs (which is the case for Game Maker), but no solution whatsoever. Should I try to contact YoYoGames? Is there anything else I can try at all?
Wait for the next update, reinstall GM, report it on the helpdesk. All of those are half decent options though you may wanna pop over to the help desk first.

Already reinstalled about 7 times. I'd rather just jump out to C++ and Ogre3D than wait for the next update, so I guess I'll pass by the helpdesk.

Here is how I fixed it:
1. Close GameMaker
2. Open Regedit (Start, Run, regedit)
3. Delete the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Game Maker\Version 8.1\Preferences" key.
4. Start GameMaker.
I'm sure it's something in that key that's causing my problem but I've looked through it and can't figure out what half of it is for. Someone else may be able to narrow it down a bit more but deleting the entire Preferences key sorted it out for me. If you are using other versions of GM than 8.1 then you may need to search the registry for GameMaker and see if there is something similar. None of these registry entries are removed when uninstalling GameMaker that's why uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't work.
Hope this helps.

I've discovered what was going on. Turns out my custom W7 theme (Silica Glass) had a taskbar height that Game Maker did not expect (the bar with the minimize and close buttons was about half of the size), so my guess is that it was trying to do some operation with the number of pixels vertically which did not result in a complete number, causing an invalid floating point operation.I had a similar problem in 8.1 after trying to create a gigantic room (way too big). Every time after that GM would crash with "Invalid Floating Point Operation" error.
Here is how I fixed it:
1. Close GameMaker
2. Open Regedit (Start, Run, regedit)
3. Delete the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Game Maker\Version 8.1\Preferences" key.
4. Start GameMaker.

Also I had already tried your solution before, didn't work.

I had this error today, too.
It was caused by my AMD Catalyst Control settings.
Anti-Alias must be set to "application controlled" or else this error will pop up.
